Where Science Gets A Makeover

The mission of The Fab Lab is to bring accessibility, inclusivity, and representation to STEM.

---

What is The Fab Lab?

Established in 2010, the Fab Lab With Crazy Aunt Lindsey is one of YouTube's longest running, most beloved kids science and reading web shows that takes everyday science concepts and turns them into fabulous DIY projects that kids can do at home with their families. Fabulous and informative, activities are quick-to-do, done with inexpensive-to-aquire supplies, and environmentally friendly. While fun to watch, the whole point of the show is to encourage real-time learning by creation, participation, and sharing as every Fab Lab science projects double as a snack, gift, game, or home decor.

Who is Crazy Aunt Lindsey?

The Internet's Favorite Babysitter. As the creator and host of The Fab Lab, Aunt Lindsey overflows with enthusiasm, see's the world just a little differently that anyone else you've ever met, and thinks science and sequins make the perfect lab partners.

Why is The Fab Lab With Crazy Aunt Lindsey so important?

SOURCES: CNN article // US News report // National Science Foundation 2017 Report

Science is FABULOUS and has brought us all a very long way. MANY kinds of people have contributed to its advancement throughout history but for a very long time, the "faces" of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) seem to have been dominated by a very specific looking type of person and taught in the same way - often relegated to a laboratory or classroom.

From where I stand, science and STEM is for everyone...and everywhere! But persisting statistics tell us very clearly that entire chunks of people still don't feel welcome in STEM fields, let alone believe that they can be successful in them.

Three of the things I see as barriers for entry

  1. Science is expensive
  2. A University of Michigan study found that only 28% of adults were proficient enough to pass a test of basic STEM concepts
  3. There is a persistent lack of representation

Now, I also believe that success in STEM, as with many things, starts in childhood. So I can't help but think what these facts could look like if kids had more access sooner, were properly supported by their families, and could see themselves represented in STEM.

ENTER: The Fab Lab

The mission of The Fab Lab is to bring accessibility, inclusivity, and representation to STEM.

I do this by taking everyday science concepts and turn them into fabulous, Pinterest-worthy DIY projects that kids can do at home with their families. Quickly. Inexpensively. And together.

Think Martha Stewart + Bill Nye the Science Guy...but with a little extra flavor 😉

There are more than 50 million kids in my target age demographic and I haven't even met a full percent of them yet. When I do, they'll have YOU to thank for helping bring science to life.

Successfully completing this campaign would mean being one step closer to bring accessibility, inclusivity, and representation to STEM.

Thank you for reading. And thank you for your contribution.

MEET THE CREATOR + HOST

Creator + Host | Lindsey E. Murphy aka Crazy Aunt Lindsey

Lindsey E. Murphy is the creator and host of The Fab Lab With Crazy Aunt Lindsey. She started the show back in 2010 as a way to keep in touch with the 11 person email list of the parents + kids she'd been  babysitting for and simply kept creating videos, basically in secret,  garnering partnerships with the likes of Scientific American Magazine, the New York Academy of Sciences, and Blue Star Donuts along the way. Completely self-taught, Lindsey is a science communicator who gets a kick out of being a regular guest at conferences nationwide, giving talks and live demonstrations at places like Harvard University, Google, Girl Scouts GirlFest, and KGW News 8 on topics such as creative media and diversity in STEM, confidence, and dreaming big for women and girls. When she is not producing her show, she hosts audiences large and small from on stage, screen, and live for the nations largest TED Independent event, TEDx Portland, Travel Oregon, and many others.

Before breaking out on her own in 2017, Lindsey spent more than 15 years in marketing and business development at institutions like MTV Networks, Nike Inc., and Wieden+Kennedy and specializes in making content from the heart, digital consulting, audience + creative development with her new venture MurphMedia Co.

MORE CAMPAIGN DETAILS

Q: What is the intended outcome of the crowdfunding campaign?

The intended outcome of the crowdfunding campaign is two-fold: one is to raise money to pay the production + development team, supplies, and expenses directly relating to the show in an effort to ramp up consistency in cadence overall. The second objective is to market the series so that we spread the word as much as possible, get as many views as possible and get in front of as many kids + families as possible over the next year.

This is why the stretch goals are actually the REAL goal. $50k is just enough to do 14 episodes at a slightly - and I do mean SLIGHTLY - higher production value for about 6 months of new content. More money means

Q:  What are you guys going to do with all this money?

A:  THIS!

Q: How is that different from your "stretch goal"?

A: Lemme show you!

Q:  Will any Perks go out before the campaign is completed?

A:  No (with caveat). All physical perks are sent only after the completion of the campaign. This way the campaign AND fulfillment get the appropriate amount of attention each phase needs. I do plan to send out Twitter + handwritten thank yous on a rolling basis in my downtime which could happen at any time. Just know I'm thinking of and appreciating you in the meantime.
