What’s Special About Special Podcast is an uncensored comedy podcast that helps bring together parents of children with special needs and disabilities and give them a community.
My friends and I are parents of children with special needs and we created a network that gets together and has dinner and drinks occasionally to form a community to support each other to have an outlet and to have a place where we can share stories about our sometimes complicated, messy and even frustrating lives as well as a place to joke, laugh and feel free to express ourselves in a judgement free world. When we are together there is no political correctness and no censorship. Sometimes getting through trauma means laughing through trauma.
There are 11.2 million children with special health care needs in the United States, that’s 1 in 5 households. Even with these large numbers, a study done shows most of these families spend an average of 33 hours a week of direct care to these children and an average additional out of pocket cost of about $350 a month. These caregivers reported socially feeling isolated and that people didn’t understand their family situations, including physicians and nurses. It was found essential that these parents physical and mental health functioning would greatly improve with interventions from social interactions with others in their community. We talk so much about inclusion for our children but forget about OURSELVES.
We want to create a space for parents to come and listen that will give them a social community. Hear stories from other parents going through the same experiences they are and also join forces with experts in the field to show parents that there ARE experts that understand and bring a community together.
With your support we'll be able to launch our first season of the podcast and grow our community. There are so many parents out there that need to be reached and your funds will allow us to connect with them.
