Project Description

Unsafe – Behind India’s Rape Crisis is an ongoing project that documents stories of sexual abuse in India, with the aim of raising public awareness of the importance of gender equality and women’s rights.

I am Vittoria, 29 years old and I am a professional freelance photographer specialized in reportage; in particular I am interested in social issues and women's rights.

I’ve always felt a great connection with India since the first time I went there in 2008. During these years I raised relationship with the Indian community in Italy too and I started to focus my interests on their culture.

In particular my interest have focused on the rights of women who are victims of sexual abuse.

India is a patriarchal society in which the structure of the average family is unable to deal with sexual abuse and women are often blamed by their family as well as by the police.

As a photographer, I think it is my own task to speak to the world and tell stories that have a relevant social meaning and deserve to be told.
Those women do not have a way to make their voice heard and my desire is to make that voice being heard.

The subjects of my photos are all young women, from different rural areas of India who have been kidnapped, raped and humiliated, leaving them confused and often abandoned.

This project is for them

Kali (name changed), about 28 years, with her son, born as a result of sexual abuse.
Kali’s father is very proud of his grandson. ‘’Even if this child was not born of an act of love, he is a gift of God''
Mansi, 23 years old, now safe in her new home.''I was held captive by a man, and he and his friend began to sexually abuse me.

Pooja,15.When the Muslim women started giving me the hormone injections, I didn't understand what was happening.I was terrified'

Organization

I will be returning to India and the end of January to continue my project.

I will go to the rural areas and cities where non-government organizations are putting me in contact with the rape survivors. I will always be travelling with a male driver and a male fixer. This wis very important because it is the only way for me to reach the most dangerous regions of the country being safe.

I will be sleeping in places where me and my photo equipment could be out of danger as hostel, or hotels.

When I will be meeting the women, I will be spending one or more days with them; sitting with them, eating with them, talking with them about their experiences .
Obviously, to protect the identity of these courageous women, their names and locations have been changed and will be changed.

The challenges that these women face to tell their stories are difficult and deep, one sometimes it takes some time for them to speak up.

Where will your contribution go?

Your pledge will allow me to carry on this project in a safe way, to stay with these incredible women the time needed to create a connection with them.

With your help and the help of all these local organization my intention is to collect more and more testimonies in different rural areas and regions in order to tell these stories to the world through itinerant exhibitions and articles on magazines.

I would like to emotionally involve people, institutions, organizations, with the great hope to make a change to these women's lives, as well as the lives of the future generations of all indian women.

The aim of this project is to raise awareness on the importance of gender equality, of women, of their sacred body, of humanity.

After pledging your support, please help spread the world about this project by sharing this link on social media with all of your contacts!

Thank you so much for you support!

Ecco alcuni dettagli:
