THE GIRLS INC. APPROACH
- CREATING A COMMUNITY FOR GIRLS BY GIRLS IN BERLIN-WEDDING
- COMBINING SPORTS WITH PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- REALISING POTENTIAL. CHANGING LIVES
GIRLS INC. BERLIN is Safe-Hub's girls-centered inclusion project. Safe-Hub® is a physically and emotionally safe space for young people to access support from strong role models through a sports-based after-school programme with a special focus on health, education and employability. The Safe-Hub Campaign has a specific focus on empowering girls and fostering their participation in all programmes by creating safe and inclusive spaces.
WHAT IS THE CONCEPT?
The GIRLS INC. project will provide activities to combat the complex social issues that limit girls from participating in sports. We will create a GIRLS INC. community that combines sports with personal and professional education. It is designed as a one-year programme where ten girls from Berlin-Wedding will engage in around 40 activities around the topics of personal development, professional orientation and sports qualification.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS?
Our goal is to empower young women from structurally disadvantaged backgrounds not only on a personal and professional level, but also make doing sports a normal activity and to amplify their voice. Through this programme we create strong female role models that react back to their peers and community.
WHO IS OUR TARGET GROUP?
Our target group are girls between 13-15 years from Berlin-Wedding, a social and cultural diverse district where 66% of the children under 15 years are depending on social welfare. Every 6th child is obese when coming into school. Whereas 15% of boys in this age are engaging in sports only 8% of girls are. Sports can be a good source of empowerment but due to their social & cultural backgound, girls are often faced with barriers regarding sports engagement and hence cut off from its positive effects in life.
HOW IS GIRLS INC. IMPLEMENTED?
Within one year we will provide access to sports: regular football matches, tournaments and other sporting events such as running or basketball. More to that, regular access to innovative workshop formats within the sphere of personal & professional development and mentoring will be offered. Events to foster the sense of community and to get them in touch with female role models in sports and business are also part of the programme. A formal qualification as a DFB Junior Coach as well as a first-aid course will be part of the package as well.
WHY DO WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT?
With your contribution we will be able to start the pilot program and fund the scholarships for the first 10 participants of the Girls Inc. project. Every girl will get a scholarship for this life-changing one year and benefit a lifetime from that - so be part of the change that we want to see on a global level!
