Melanated Mamas Improving Postpartum Care

Melanated Mamas provides community and resources to Black and Brown mothers during their pregnancy and postpartum journey so that they can feel supported, empowered, and joyful as they blossom into motherhood. 

The Problem 

Currently, 60,000 women experience complications during pregnancy or birth in the United States, and Black women are 2-3 times more likely to experience these complications than white women. According to the CDC, this is the largest perinatal health disparity, and over 50% of these complications are preventable.

But when we are dealing with healthcare providers that aren’t culturally competent, navigating intimating healthcare systems that are hard to speak up in, and unable to access quality health care, it makes it difficult for BIPOC women to have a stress-free and joyful pregnancy and birthing experiences.  

Women in this country are experiencing different pregnancies and births based on their race, and that is a problem we can’t wait around to fix.

The Solution 

Melanated Mamas is a maternal wellness platform that empowers BIPOC mothers to navigate their maternity care so that they can advocate for their needs and speak up when necessary, save time researching for education about their pregnancy, and feel celebrated and supported during their journey.  

Currently, 50% of the maternity complications happen after birth, and Black and Brown women have an increased likelihood of experiencing a perinatal mood disorder and suffered in silence; we decided to start our product line with a postpartum box.

Our postpartum products help expecting BIPOC women feel confident, prepared, and supported during their journey into motherhood by providing curated, high-quality products and a supportive community. Unlike other postpartum care options, Melanated Mamas products encourage self-advocacy and empower mamas to blossom into motherhood flourishing.

Our Goals 

We believe that every mother deserves to blossom into motherhood flourishing, feeling supported, empowered, and joyful, and we do that by treating every mother with humanity and compassion.

Melanated Mamas is seeking funding to help launch our postpartum box, rent fulfillment space, and build our distribution network to ensure our logistics run smoothly and in a timely manner. We want to reach as many BIPOC mamas as possible and help them enter motherhood thriving.
