Project Description

WE SIGNED A LEASE!!! WE WILL OPEN ON SEPTEMBER 15TH.

  • As the country began to reopen, we were looking for a place to practice yoga. One that was centered on community building. One that offered challenging yoga in a non-judgmental environment. It finally occurred to us, that we should open our own studio!
  • Before the pandemic there were multiple large yoga studios in the Greenwich Village area. Unfortunately, most of them have closed. Some because of the pandemic. But many other either because of misconduct on the part of the owner/operator or financial mismanagement.
  • We are seeking funding to open our doors and get the ball rolling. Having run the numbers over and over again - sharing them with every bright financial mind we know - we are confident that we will start seeing a profit after the first month. We need you as the ignition, the spark to get us going.

  • Our mission is to create a yoga studio that is welcoming to all. Where members of both the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities will see themselves (from senior management through staff, teachers and membership).
  • While it was originally created as a physical and spiritual practice in India, yoga has been co-opted by able bodied (mostly white) practitioners as a workout and not much more. As yogis ourselves, we grew tired of walking into studio after studio that looked the same. We will create the studio we have been looking for - one that reflects the diverse city in which we live.

  • We will create a trauma-informed yoga studio. Trauma-informed yoga works to restore the balance between the rational and emotional brains. The goal is to give the practitioner tools with which they might respond, instead of relying on instant reactivity so often cultivated by the fight/flight/freeze response.
  • The practice acknowledges that you are (and always have been) your own best teacher. It is a way of teaching that gives the student the support they need to make their own decisions - starting on the mat and continuing throughout your day-to-day life.

  • Co-Founders Jen Nigro (Creative Director) and Shephathiah Townsend (Director of Operations) met after completing our yoga teacher training in 2016. Our dedication to the practice meant we kept finding our yoga mats next to each over and over again until a deep friendship was formed.
  • Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! It truly means the world to us. We can't wait to welcome you to our studio. With gratitude.

The Campaign FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

I REALLY miss practicing IRL - can I just buy a membership?
Not yet, my fellow eager yogi! That’s what we are working on here and now. We are in the very beginning stages of raising funds. However, if you check out our donation levels, you will see there are many ways to make sure yours is one of the first mats put down in the room when we open.

I am in a position where I can loan you some money. Is that a way I can help?
Yes - we would love to have you as one of our Founding Partners. We're looking for people who are willing to invest with us and can be paid back in full within 18 months of our opening, without additional interest. We will ask investors to review a financial contract at time of fund transfer. All investment carries risk.

I REALLY want to practice with you but don’t live in the NYC area/am a busy working mom/am still afraid of seeing people in this post-COVID world.
We have you covered! Home Yoga wants to meet you where you are. If that is “still in the cocoon that is my house,” you can practice with us online. We will have a robust offering of classes available both in studio and via the internet (it’s a series of tubes), with live and on-demand options.

What made you want to open your own yoga studio?
We are both dedicated practitioners. Jen is an experienced teacher and mentor. Shephathiah has managed multiple yoga studios. As the world began to “re-open,” we found ourselves searching for that perfect place to practice yoga in community once again. It then occurred to us - maybe we can’t find it because it doesn’t exist. And wondered, why are we waiting for someone else to do something when we have all the tools we need to do this ourselves.

What is Trauma Informed Yoga?
Trauma-informed yoga works in six unique ways, all of which act as a bridge to restore the balance between the rational and emotional brains. The goal of a trauma-informed practice is to give the practitioner tools with which they might respond, instead of relying on the instant reactivity so often cultivated by the fight/flight/freeze response. Should you find this as interesting as we do, some additional information follows:

The Body Keeps the Score

I don’t identify as LGBTQ+, BIPOC, or someone who has experienced trauma. Is this yoga studio for me?
We welcome any and all students who want to practice yoga. However, we recognize that members of these communities have been marginalized and underrepresented in the modern yoga space for far too long. We are committed to making sure our studio is welcoming to and representative of our diverse city.
The fact of the matter is, yoga in America (in general) has become a white- washed, thin-bodied workout. We will create a home for the practices of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ teachers whose communities offer safe space for everyone who practices with them. Our staff will reflect the diversity of our country, not the whiteness of the fitness space.
We will welcome all bodies, all practices and create a space where skipping that chaturanga or heading to your child's pose is welcome--because YOU get to make the choices for your body on your mat. Every teacher we hire will be trauma-informed (trained through our own program, if needed) and encourage you to incorporate these offerings into your practice both on and off the mat. Trauma informed language is inclusive of all, not just the privileged few.
