Project Description

Guess who's back, back again!

We (Jen and Shephathiah) have had so many unexpected experiences over the past six months. Opening a yoga studio was only one of them. What has truly been amazing has been seeing a community come together. Teachers, students and staff have all expressed true joy to be back in a studio in person. And an interest in helping keeping this community going. To that end, we are bringing this fundraiser back as so many people have asked if they can still support us in this way.

We have opened the doors to our physical space. Now we want to truly create a community, a hOMe. We asked our staff - and they answered. They want to:

  • support immigrant families /children of immigrant families. I feel their alienation and I know yoga (along with so many other work like counseling, meditation ) have helped me in my own journey. And I want to share that with others."
  • create a space that would be welcoming to someone like my mom. I know she wants to be healthy but is surrounded by people who don't put themselves first. I want to be there to hold her hand and guide her gently, without judgment.
  • help other black and brown women to feel as confident as I do when I walk into a yoga studio. I want them to see themselves in the teachers, faculty and practitioners.
  • create a safe space for all survivors of PTSD/C-PTSD or who have experienced a traumatic event, including the current global pandemic, to restore choices on their mats so that they might begin to restore choices in their outside lives.

We need your help spreading the word. We need your help sponsoring classes for people who can't otherwise afford it while still paying our staff a living wage. We need your help extending the sense of community that we have created far and wide.

Any little helps. And, if you can't support us monetarily, we TRULY appreciate your putting out a good word, sharing this fundraiser with others, and just coming by the studio to say hi.

With gratitude.

The Campaign FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

I am in a position where I can loan you some money. Is that a way I can help?
Yes - we would love to have you as one of our Founding Partners. We're looking for people who are willing to invest with us and can be paid back in full within 18 months of our opening, without additional interest. We will ask investors to review a financial contract at time of fund transfer. All investment carries risk.

What made you want to open your own yoga studio?
We are both dedicated practitioners. Jen is an experienced teacher and mentor. Shephathiah has managed multiple yoga studios. As the world began to “re-open,” we found ourselves searching for that perfect place to practice yoga in community once again. It then occurred to us - maybe we can’t find it because it doesn’t exist. And wondered, why are we waiting for someone else to do something when we have all the tools we need to do this ourselves.

What is Trauma Informed Yoga?
Trauma-informed yoga works in six unique ways, all of which act as a bridge to restore the balance between the rational and emotional brains. The goal of a trauma-informed practice is to give the practitioner tools with which they might respond, instead of relying on the instant reactivity so often cultivated by the fight/flight/freeze response. Should you find this as interesting as we do, some additional information follows:

The Body Keeps the Score

I don’t identify as LGBTQ+, BIPOC, or someone who has experienced trauma. Is this yoga studio for me?
We welcome any and all students who want to practice yoga. However, we recognize that members of these communities have been marginalized and underrepresented in the modern yoga space for far too long. We are committed to making sure our studio is welcoming to and representative of our diverse city.
The fact of the matter is, yoga in America (in general) has become a white- washed, thin-bodied workout. We will create a home for the practices of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ teachers whose communities offer safe space for everyone who practices with them. Our staff will reflect the diversity of our country, not the whiteness of the fitness space.
We will welcome all bodies, all practices and create a space where skipping that chaturanga or heading to your child's pose is welcome--because YOU get to make the choices for your body on your mat. Every teacher we hire will be trauma-informed (trained through our own program, if needed) and encourage you to incorporate these offerings into your practice both on and off the mat. Trauma informed language is inclusive of all, not just the privileged few.
