Our Founding Story

Dr. Bakhru came from humble beginnings - blue collar, immigrant parents - the kind that work nights and weekends, and sacrifice to give their children the opportunities they never had. She is proud to have become the first doctor in her family. After completing a residency in Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation in 2016, she took a job in Park Slope, and over the past 7 years, has become a go-to local provider for Developmental and Neuro-Optometric services.

In February 2020, she founded Brooklyn Vision Therapy. It was a labor of love, catalyzed by an unfortunate situation that left both her and her patients hanging mid-treatment. While she never expected to be in business on her own, she rolled up her sleeves and rose to the challenge. With the support of friends and family, she was thrilled to open the only clinic exclusively specializing in Vision Therapy in a borough with more than 2 million residents!

Then COVID-19 hit. The office was forced to shut down for 12 weeks, after less than a month in business. Being so new, BVT was ineligible for most small business disaster aid. Upon reopening, Dr. Bakhru kept patient safety top-of-mind, constantly adapting protocols to account for the latest public health guidance. With each wave of variants came a wave of cancellations, but the demand always picked back up.  

In spite of a turbulent start, our little office persevered, serving over 350 unique patients over the course of 2500 appointments! BVT is now entering its third year of operation with a growing waitlist! We believe this is a testament to the power of vision therapy and the quality of care we provide. 

Our Vision 

Our next step is to move forward with long-anticipated plans to build-out a brand new clinic with increased capacity, and to increase staffing.  As many of you know, until recently, Dr. Bakhru had been running the business single-handedly! Lucian, our trusty assistant and vision therapist has been a godsend!

We've signed a lease, drawn up plans and secured financing, but hit a standstill due to higher-than-anticipated construction costs, driven by the surge in inflation this year. We are turning to our community for help to make the final leap forward. 

We also hope that the funds raised will bring us one step closer to offering sliding-scale pricing, a vision (pun intended) Dr. Bakhru has had from the start. Providing accessible care is particularly important to us; we know that despite its power to change lives, vision therapy is rarely covered by medical insurance. With your help, we can make sliding-scale pricing a sustainable reality at BVT.

Why Vision Therapy?

Post-treatment, our patients often report clearer vision, reduced eye strain, fewer headaches, improved ability to focus, less motion-sickness, improved reading ability, resolved double vision, and better spatial awareness.

We feel privileged to help children (and adults!) become more confident readers, to help brain injury survivors return to work, and to help our fellow Brooklynites use their vision more comfortably and efficiently.
