What is IE:

Intersectional Environmentalist is a BIPOC-woman-led, environmental education-focused 501(c)(3) that’s shifting the narrative of environmental storytelling to center diversity and joy. With a growing community of 500,000 people, and resources and experiences that reach millions of people around the globe each year. IE’s core programming includes: hosting community-driven climate justice concerts, giving away free books written by authors of color, and producing hundreds of educational resources at the intersections of climate and culture, including student-created documentaries, zines, toolkits, and more.

Current Challenge:

Less than 4% of philanthropic funding in the environmental space goes to Black, Indigenous, + people of color-led organizations. Over the past two years since our founding, our grassroots team has created hundreds of resources that have reshaped environmental curriculums, organizations, and more to prioritize diversity and intersectionality - but without investment, we are at risk of not being able to sustainably continue our operations + impact.

Our Big Idea:

With donations and support, In 2022 at events in the U.S. and U.K., we gave away over 500 books written by people of color that were purchased from BIPOC-led indie bookstores and reached millions of people across social media. In the last 2 years, we’ve also created documentaries, toolkits, magazines, and thousands of resources that have reached millions of people and we want to reach even more people next year and increase impact by hosting more events, creating free resources, and giving away books.

The Details:

• We buy books written by BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled and authors of the global majority.
• We purchase 5,000 books from indie bookstores owned by the same communities.
• We compensate local contributors including educators + artists that co-create joyful + educational experiences with us around the books we’re sharing.
• We distribute free books to the next generation of intersectional environmentalists in these community spaces.
• We compensate a small team that supports our operations, programming + educational resource development to help bring our mission to life.

Your support will bring these books to more cities in 2023 and lead to the creation of empowering resources to share with our community of nearly half a million people online.

Our fundraising Goal is $250k

• Goal #1 $150k: this investment will allow us to cover our operating costs and equitably pay and implement benefits for our staff who develop all of our free educational resources. 
• Goal #2 $200k: this investment will allow us to purchase thousands of books from the authors and local bookstores we seek to support to distribute for free to our community. 
• Goal #3 $250k: this investment will allow us to expand our community activations to more cities in 2023, maintain our website, operational tools, and pay programming contributors.
