Project Description
Breakthrough is an experience unlike any other. We are breaking barriers, leading with intention, and making a difference by:
- Sharing our love for dance and professional expertise with our community
- Providing creative employment opportunities for artists
- Connecting dancers with college resources, mentorship, and career guidance
- Offering resources that will support young dancers as they pursue professional careers
- Giving financial support to dance studio owners that host our events
- Providing a safe creative space for LGBTQ and Trans youth dancers
- Equipping artists with assistance in the areas of retirement, life insurance, etc.
The dance convention and competition world is a multi-million dollar industry. Few are mission based and even less lead with diversity. In fact, BIPOC dance educators, instructors, master teachers, and choreographers are terribly under-represented in these companies.
Our Mission.
By creating this tour of training events, we will provide employment for more BIPOC artists, ensuring that all cultures and ethnicities are represented and included.
Our Vision.
We want dance students everywhere to leave this experience inspired and confident that a professional dance career is attainable. In addition to versatile styles of dance, we will teach them to be bold and courageous on their path to greatness.
We are so excited to spread the word and build this community. It's time to pass the torch to a new generation of highly-talented artists. We want them to know that there is a place in this industry for them and that they matter.
My name is Angela Carter and I am the Founder and Creator of this initiative. I attended the University of Toledo in Ohio. As soon as I graduated, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a professional dance career. I've performed for film/tv, but my true passion and greatest joy is teaching and working with young dancers. To be a part of their journey is so inspirational and fulfilling. I am co-owner of Tap Into the Network, a 15-year old touring tap dance convention. I am the author and creator of The Genius Guide to College Dance Programs which assists high school juniors and seniors along their college prep and selection process. I've spent many years working behind the scenes in various parts of the dance industry and am uniquely qualified to drive this mission forward.

Motivated by impact, we are moving forward with intention, instilling integrity in our dancers. We will teach them to go above and beyond - not just in dance, but in life.

The Genius Guide to College Dance Programs was created to assist dancers throughout the college selection process. Featured are experiences from parents of dancers who are current college students. We break down the differences between dance in high school and college, a subject most dancers have never considered. Professional dancers and choreographers share their college journey as well. Graduates from prestigious institutions like Juilliard, Oklahoma City University, Point Park University, AMDA, Pace University and many more share their experiences, wisdom, and words of advice. We also provide you with insider information from college faculty members from California to Ohio.
Career Paths for Dancers will introduce ideas for a dance-related profession so you can stay connected. Career Paths for Dancers features over 30 genius options to keep you connected to the dance industry!
Dance Genius was created in 2015 as an educational online platform. Our intention is to connect the world to the industry's most influential and accomplished teachers and choreographers. Visitors and members get the opportunity to train and take online classes from professionals in various styles including jazz, tap, ballet, contemporary, hip hop, lyrical, and musical theatre. Instructors reside all over the country - Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, etc.
This reward gets you 3 months of unlimited access to all classes. You'll be Broadway bound in no time! Come dance with us... we'll see you in class!
Your donation will be awarded to a dancer in the form of a scholarship to one of our events. Dancers can attend for free with your help! Winners of this scholarship are selected based on focus, work ethic, and character.
At Breakthrough, young dancers will get the opportunity to train with some of our industry's most respected master educators. They will gain exposure to fundamental skills and cutting-edge choreography. Dancers will receive individualized attention from professionals who can help them move closer to their goals!
