Project Description
Attacks on DEI Took Our Grant, and it's just the beginning...
In October 2024, we won a $20,000 grant from We All Grow, an organization dedicated to supporting Latina entrepreneurs for over 14 years. The grant was a game-changer for us—funding that would help us bring our first SPF product to life. In fact, it was this pitch competition that dared me to dream bigger than ever for Bright Body. But just a few months later, everything changed.
In January 2025, the new administration's Executive Order 14173 marked the beginning of the end. It began a coordinated attack on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
Despite court challenges, this order changed the tide for major corporations. We All Grow lost their corporate sponsorships overnight.
Then they were sued - thanks to the precedent set by the American Alliance for Equal Rights used to sue the Fearless Fund. The argument from the Fearless Fund case? That programs designed to support marginalized entrepreneurs are ‘discriminatory.’ The courts sided with them.
With their sponsorships gone and legal bills piling up, We All Grow had no choice but to close their business. While they were able to sell their community - called The Amigahood - to a nonprofit, the proceeds were barely enough to cover their debts and legal fees.
What This Means For Bright Body
We were supposed to receive our grant in two payments - one in December and one in February. While we received the first half, we will never receive the second.
But honestly, Bright Body is just collateral damage. We All Grow is the real victim - after 14 years of empowering Latina entrepreneurs, their business was destroyed in a matter of months.
This Isn't Just About Us
The sociopolitical climate and legal precedent are clear: any business or organization that supports underserved communities - whether for women, racial and ethnic minorities, the LGBTQ+ community, or the disabled community - is now in this administration's crosshairs. We All Grow is one of the first casualties, but it won't be the last.

- What happens if you raise less than $75,000?
- We are obligated to fulfill our rewards, and if we cannot fulfill them, our funders can choose a 100% refund OR - in the case of unforeseen delays - can opt to remain as a funder for a launch later than anticipated. One of Bright Body's core values is transparency, and we are committed updating our funders at every step of this project.
We acknowledge that current economic conditions make it unlikely that we will reach our goal, so we are taking every possible route to make up the difference between what we raise and what we need to complete this project, including additional grant applications, traditional financing, and more. We are committed to bringing this product to life, and as a small, scrappy business we know it's not always easy.

- Do we have to contribute to your campaign to enter the giveaway?
- Will the SPF be safe for all ages?
- Yes! The formula will be safe for use on anyone 6 months of age or older. It will use zinc oxide as the only active ingredient.
- When will we be getting our SPF?
- We will be sending the sunscreen as soon as we receive our first production batch, some time in May or June 2026. The development, testing, and registration of sunscreen takes significant time due to FDA regulations. If there are any delays in the process we will inform our contributors ASAP! We will ensure that you get your products before we officially launch to the public.
- What does the sticker look like?
- In true Bright Body pro-science fashion, our sticker says "ask me about the wellness to alt-right pipeline." If you don't get it, check out this post on our Instagram. Here is a mockup of the sticker:
- Why do you even want to make an SPF now?
- This has been our #1 most requested product since we launched in 2017. We weren't ready logistically or operationally to consider a project of this size until this phase in business. While there are other mineral sunscreens on the market, none of them meet Bright Body standards for ingredients, packaging, and performance. We want to do SPF our way and create a truly nontoxic, sustainable, and inclusive formula.
- So you lost part of your grant...why can't you just get another one?
- Small business grants are extremely difficult to come by and judging criteria are subjective and vary widely. Furthermore, the current sociopolitical and economic climate have made grants even more rare. I'm extremely confident in the long-term viability of our business and in the market demand for this product, but that does not mean that grants will fall into my lap.
- Why can't you fund this yourself?
- As a small, self-funded business, we don't have $75,000 in cash laying around that we can use to spend on this project. Given current sociopolitical and economic conditions, it's not advisable for us to go through traditional financing routes (especially not the SBA, given the current administration's attacks on government agencies). Not to mention that women and minority-owned businesses are less likely to receive funding when compared to their white male counterparts.
