Novados Swim, the Newest Black-Owned and Sustainable Swimwear Collection Launches First Crochet Collection

November 3rd, 2021 (Fort Lauderdale, FL): Emerging swimwear collection Novados Swim will debut this holiday season with the launch of Novadosswim.com, now live.

Novados is a luxury crochet swimwear collection that aims to create sustainable handmade pieces with minimal impact on the environment and oceans. The debut crochet collection features curve highlighting designs that encourage women to embrace their natural curves versus concealing them. Our fun and flirty collection features innovative designs in vibrant hues with textiles sourced from all over the world and handmade in South Florida.

With family always at the forefront of everything we do, Novados combines Ashanté Nicole's parents' lineage; Nova Scotia and Barbados. "My maternal Nova Scotian side is where I first began loving the art of crocheting and knitting. My grandmother and great-grandmother taught me to do both when I was four years old. My draw to the ocean and swimwear comes from my paternal Bajan side," says Ashanté Nicole.

Having over 20 years of crochet and knitting experience, owner and designer Ashante Nicole created pieces that incorporate traditional swimwear elements usually found in Lycra swimsuits, including boning, under-wire, lining, and distinctive designs. There are a variety of bikini bottom fits, offered as separates, ranging from thongs to full coverage, giving the customer a unique ability to pick a suit they feel most comfortable.

"I spent way too much time trying to find swimwear that fit my 00 top half and curvy size six bottom half. One-piece and monokinis are a nightmare to fit. Bikini bottoms in sets are always too small for my bottom. Knowing I'm not alone in this dilemma, I had to do something about it," says Ashanté.

"It is essential to me that I am as inclusive as possible since most of the swimwear brands neglect the womanly shaped customers out there in my design process. I want to make sure that I offer women different swimsuits that embrace and love their bodies. That's why I crochet. The form-fitting yet comfortable feel of a crochet piece is like an extension of the skin you're in. So many other collections can make you feel ashamed when the size you think you should wear is too small and gives you the appearance of love handles, back-fat, etc. It's not our fault we are made with complexities; it's that brand's fault for not highlighting it!" she adds.

The colors of the Mediterranean inspire the debut collection. There was a heavy focus on finding jewel-toned cotton yarns and distinctive hardware, embellishments, and beading that hint to the Mediterranean influence.

The first collection includes:

  • Five monokinis ( Prices between $245 - $250).
  • Seven bikinis sold as separates and sets (Prices between $115 - $355).
  • Two maillot one-piece styles (Prices between $245 - $375).

Sizes range from XS - L in the online store, but Novados also offers a bespoke service  for sizes 14 and above. Customers in the plus-size category will be worked with one-on-one to ensure the suit addresses their specific needs and precisely fits their measurements.

In addition to the crochet pieces, Novados will offer a made-to-order cut & sew nylon swimwear range, created from expertly sourced materials and produced in small quantities to reduce our carbon footprint slated for a Summer 2022 release.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Ashanté Nicole is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology. She received a B.S. in International Trade and Marketing for the Fashion Industries and an A.A.S in Fashion Merchandising Management.

After deepening her extensive knowledge of the fashion industry by working for six years in retail, her focus was wardrobing the customer. This allowed her to develop and fine-tune her eye for style. Her entry  into the fashion world began in 2008 when she volunteered backstage for NYFW and has been in love ever since.

Upon receiving an internship opportunity in the BET wardrobe department, it became even more apparent to her that her heart was in wardrobing. As a stylist, she has worked with designers including Fashion Runway Alumni Malan Breton, The Sachika Twins, and retailers including Loehmanns, and more.

In the years since, she has worked with celebrity photographers Anthony Winters and Christopher Kolk. She has obtained print placements in Elle, 20/20, Raine and Bella Magazine, and contributed wardrobe advice to Retail Me Not. Her greatest accomplishment was being the lead stylist for the Malan Breton Fantôme runway presentation during New York Fashion Week.

Over the last decade, she has also fine-tuned her skills as a digital marketing expert, working as a photo shoot producer and public relations manager. Past fashion clients include Project Runway Alumni Jason Troisi and Malan Breton, Nude Barre hosiery, BM Franklin & Co hats, and Activist Eyewear.
