Project Description

Tipping the Scale: Women and Girls in a #MeToo World featured a panel of thought-leaders exploring the societal transformation known as the #MeToo Movement and the potential challenges to progress because of political, legislative, judiciary and cultural changes. The conversation looked at how everyone can prepare themselves for life in what is arguable a critically important time in American history.

The goal of this event was to offer thoughtful insights and ideas that will help individuals and businesses better navigate this new normal.

Discussion topics will include:

the impact on womens rights from cultural and systemic changes;

the challenges and opportunities to come;

strategies for empowering women and girls;

#MeToo…#Times Up…Now What?;

the role of men in the movement.

ABOUT GIRLS INC OF NYC

Launched in 1998, as a member of the national organization, Girls Inc. of New York City provides safe spaces, mentoring, and programming that help girls build lasting skills that will enable them to succeed. Trained youth development professionals deliver, Girls Inc. programming that's intentional (every component serves an important purpose) and compensatory (for gender inequity). We also advocate with--and for--girls to create systematic change. We understand the needs of girls and how to enable their development into strong, smart, and bold adults.

How do you know you’re successful?

An extensive history of effectively preparing girls for academic success (particularly math, science and financial literacy) has enabled us to have impact:

  • Over 95% of our girls graduate from high school in four years
  • When compared to their low-income peers throughout New York City, GINYC alumnae enroll in college at higher percentages, are more likely to attend four-year colleges, and demonstrate greater commitment in completing a degree once in college
  • Over 1/3 of girls attending college study in a STEM field.

What is your impact?

Our program evaluations (conducted by an outside agency) highlight many of the ways our programs are helping to change the lives of the girls we serve:

  • In the 2018-19 school year, girls in our after school programs increased their grades for all core subject areas over the course of the school year.
  • Girls in grades 7-12 felt more empowered to do well at the end of their program and resistance to stereotypes was very high.
  • A large majority of girls avoided using alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs and very few were sexually active.
  • Over 60% of senior girls participating in our total range of programs go on to college.

How are you fund financially?

  • Over 82% of all funds received are applied to program expenses.
  • We received a four star rating from Guidestar for financial and administrative effectiveness; Silver rating from Charity Navigator; and the Better Business Bureau’s seal of approval.
  • Research-based curricula, delivered by trained, mentoring professionals in a positive all-girls environment equip girls to achieve academically; lead healthy and physically active lives; manage money; navigate media messages; and discover an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
