The Hive is a hub for connecting and empowering women in North Idaho. Part coworking, part learning annex, The Hive is designed with the needs of women in mind. From eclectic and collaborative seating areas, to workshops for personal and professional development and engaging events that get women talking, The Hive is a space where ambitious women, active entrepreneurs and experienced professionals can cross-pollinate, creating unlimited opportunities for investing into an essential component of a thriving local ecosystem: women.
Located on the corner of 4th and Indiana Ave in downtown Coeur d'Alene, The Hive boasts over 3,400 Sq. ft. of repurposed space with a design aesthetic developed by modern creative women. One eye on fashion, the other on thrift, the eclectic style and repurposed artistry within The Hive offers a unique canvas for capturing and pursuing modern entrepreneurial endeavors. A luminous event space plays hostess to workshops, pop-ups and evenings of forward-thinking dialogue. Creating a space for women is about making women's work more visible, increasing a women-driven economy, and tuning into the unique challenges for women seeking self-sustaining work.
Melinda Cadwallader, along with her daughter Delia, conceived The Hive as a community space to house hope and propel ambition. A space to turn the potholes of dead-end jobs into pathways of possibility for women. As a once single mother living off government assistance, Melinda began working for a woman who propelled her employees forward. She was able to see women economically independent and learned how to make that her own reality. Twenty years later, Melinda wants to be that woman who makes a space for women to forge new pathways for themselves.
"Women need an empowering space to work. We need to be surrounded by fellow ambitious women who show us anything is possible. Work has to look different for women because how we work is different for us. We don't want a dead-end job, we want launchpads to spring from. Women, when given the space, the freedom and the resources, become not just business owners, but business leaders: people invested into the personal and professional development of others."
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho is host to incredible views that expand the mind, spur imagination and ignite big dreams. But without a strong circle of influence, a woman's pathway to achieving her dream becomes steep, narrow and often dead ends. The Hive will stand as a physical hub in this digital age, a space for enhancing skills, where a place of employment become a supportive allie to the advancement of local women.
While Idaho ranks 49th in the Best /Worst states for women's equality, over $3 million is spent annually towards the rescue and rehabilitation of disempowered women. The good news: Idaho is 18th in the nation for growth in the number of women owned businesses, which means women are on the rise to economic independence. Now, we need more space to pursue it.
Our plans include a media room suitable for hosting podcasts, vlogs and live stories; privacy booths and collaborative conference room; and a powder room equipped with shower, vanity station, and stocked with local beauty products. The Hive is a place for ambitious women to work independently, collaborate on projects, connect in real life and invest in herself.
The Hive is a "Yes, and..." space, it is for industry professionals and entrepreneurs, passion projects and side hustles, young adults and seasoned experts. This space is dedicated to advancement of all kinds.
With Coeur d'Alene known as an innovative community that supports entrepreneurship and local business, local women should not need to go into deep debt, offer equity in exchange for support, or pursue a dream in isolation.
The Hive is offering 50 women the opportunity to purchase a Founding Membership at a discounted rate. So far, we have 12 women on board and will stay visible and vocal until all 50 spots are filled. At the center of our business model, The Hive offers a 5-for-1 grant, offering membership to women who need it most. For every five annual Lifestyle memberships purchased, we will fund one full annual membership. Whatever the hurdles are for a woman to tap into her potential, The Hive seeks to help her jump them.
We will work to offer a robust calendar highlighting local women’s meetups, classes, and events within our local community that provide women resources and tools for personal and professional development. As the landscape of work, home and sustainability changes, women are crucial to pioneering new ways forward. We are connectors, change makers and life-givers. Our two evenings of dialogue have featured a panel of local women sharing about the work they do. These events have impacted women to consider their own potential and provided inspiration for pursuing them.
Our goal is to cultivate a network of local women dedicated to developing and supporting the advancement of local women. As the Queen Bee's of a local ecosystem, we invite the wisdom of women to help step up the startup culture with a more inclusive, diverse, and feminine approach. We are inviting North Idaho women to join us in the mission of The Hive by becoming a founding member.
