Personal Safety Reimagined.
TanTek is a personal tracking device in the form of discrete, wearable jewelry that sends an alert at the moment an emergency occurs in situations where every second counts.
We are currently living in a time with a lot of pent up demand to travel, explore and get life back to normal after the pandemic. There is a lot of excitement in the idea of returning to normal, but that also presents an added risk of danger.
There were 1.2 million NCIC entries for missing persons in the U.S. in 2019 and 2020 combined. In 2019, there were 11,500 cases of human trafficking reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Uber, a ride-sharing platform used predominately by riders ages 16 to 34, received nearly 6,000 reports of sexual assaults from both riders and drivers across the U.S. in 2017 and 2018.
The active elderly are also at risk. There are currently more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer's. Almost two-thirds of this population are women. Six in 10 people living with the disease will wander at least once or become lost or confused about their location. The number of Americans living with Alzheimer's is projected to increase to more than 13 million by 2050.
These problems and trends are particularly prevalent in the Black community. In 2019, nearly 37% of reported missing children were Black despite Black children only making up about 14% of all children in the U.S. Black women make up less than 7% of the U.S. population but represent nearly 10% of all missing persons cases throughout the country. According to the FBI, 40% of victims of sex trafficking are African Americans. African Americans are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's than Caucasians.
Currently, there is no personal tracking device that automatically sends an alert for help -- a critical feature for scenarios where you are in danger but unable to call for help, or for the active elderly who wander and may be in danger but might not realize it.
Our solution is discrete, wearable jewelry, TanTek, that functions as a tracking device that the user can have on them at all times. This wearable tracking device will send an emergency alert at the time the danger occurs so that a user's loved ones and emergency contacts are notified immediately in situations where every second counts.
How TanTek Works
TanTek will have manual and automatic features to send an alert.
For the manual feature, the user will be able to alert their loved ones by holding and pressing the alert button on the TanTek jewelry device for three seconds or pressing the alert button within the paired mobile application.
For the automatic features, the user will be able to activate one of two desired monitoring features within the app: 1) Automatic Phone Trigger or 2) Geo-fencing Trigger.
For the Automatic Phone Trigger, once your TanTek jewelry device is separated a pre-set distance from your phone, the alert will trigger and notify your emergency contacts. For the Geo-fencing Trigger, once the user moves outside a certain radius of a pre-defined area while wearing their TanTek jewelry device, the alert will trigger and notify the user's emergency contacts.
If you accidentally trigger your alert, you will be able to mark yourself as safe and disable the alert in the TanTek mobile application by entering your password.
The TanTek Mobile Application
The market opportunities are vast including parents of children in K-12, college and university students, pet owners, and individuals whose loved ones have Alzheimer's or Dementia.
The Black community is also a significant driver of market opportunities. 17% of African Americans take one or more international trips and more than six local trips a year. Black leisure travelers in the U.S. spent $109.4 billion on travel in 2019, which represented 13.1% of the total leisure travel market.
The tracking device market overall is projected to grow at a continued annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.87% from 2020 to 2027 with the use of tracking devices among family consumers expected to grow for use with tracking toddlers, pets, and parents who have Alzheimer's or Dementia.
An analysis of our competitors highlights that there is a key feature missing in today's personal tracking devices. TanTek will meet that unmet need.
Meet The Founder, Jillian Tancil
I came up with the idea for TanTek as a Harvard Law student as I was preparing for my first solo trip to Paris during spring break – which would also be my first trip outside of the country. As an independent young woman, who has lived in a number of major cities, I never wanted to end up in a dangerous situation and not have anyone know where I was or what happened to me. I’m also aware that as a woman of color, if I were to go missing, my disappearance may not garner much media attention, thus making it even harder for my family to figure out what happened to me.
My grandmother also has Alzheimer’s and I have seen firsthand how easy it was for her to wander and get lost and the fear this created as my family tried to search for her.
TanTek’s unique features provide a way to make sure your loved ones are safe and also keep yourself safe and notify friends and loves ones in the precise moment that an emergency occurs for various scenarios.
With your help, I can take TanTek from idea to reality.
There are clear barriers to women, especially women of color (WOC), when it comes to fundraising. As of 2019, WOC account for 50% of all women-owned businesses and generate $422.5 billion in revenue for the economy. Yet, out of $85 Billion in VC funding last year, WOC only received less than 1%. As a WOC-owned business, I am crowdfunding due to these disparities.
I am currently seeking funding to finalize the prototype design of TanTek–a critical step that is currently underway but needs additional funding to complete.
I believe TanTek can and will save so many lives, but I need your help and support to make that vision a reality. You are not only investing in the future of TanTek, but in the future of your safety and peace of mind.
