Sober Black Girls Club
Sober Black Girls Club is a collective that provides resources and support to Black girls considering beautiful sober lives.

Project Description

In the fall of 2018, Khadi Olagoke, decided that she wanted to live a sober life. When she turned online for guidance and influence she noticed that many of the pro-sobriety platforms catered to women who simply did not look like her or anyone in her community.
When Khadi turned to organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous, she made a similar observation. However, desperate to recover, she stayed. Since 2018, Khadi has noticed three important things: (1) that alcoholism can affect anyone, (2) that anyone can recover and (3) that one's history, background and economic status affects their recovery.
In an attempt to share her experience and connect with women of color in sobriety, Khadi created Sober Black Girls Club. At that time, SBGC only consisted of a blog. Today, it produces posts, newsletters, products, and fellowships/events for its 13,000 members.
Our mission is to improve health, wellness and sobriety among Black women; to address the struggles we face with substance abuse; and to increase our presence in the sober community.

Varying factors contribute to alcoholism in African-Americans. We endure social stigmas and violence due to racial discrimination. Social pressure(s) to conform to behavioral expectations, as well as projected prejudice are often a chronic source of stress and illness in the community. In response to higher levels of stress, some may develop anxiety or psychosis. Others may self-medicate by drinking alcohol and gradually increase their alcohol intake.
A 2010 Johns Hopkins study concluded that 20.4% of African-Americans between the ages of 12 and 20 consumed alcohol in a 30-day period. As a result, alcohol consumption has been responsible for “contributing to the 3rd leading cause of death” in African-American communities.
