Six Degrees Society
Six Degrees Society is a women's focused networking organization with chapters in NYC, Chicago, LA, New Orleans, San Francisco, Miami, Atlanta, DC, Boston and Philadelphia that connects individuals through curated and handpicked 15 minute matches and event programming.
Our programming is designed to help foster personal and professional connections and inspire continuous learning in individuals.
Six Degrees Society Founder, Emily Merrell, developed the idea of curated connecting after finding networking events frustrating when she worked in the fashion industry. Through the support of her community the events evolved from a side hustle to a full time hustle and left the corporate world at the end of 2015. To her surprise, the ask for Six Degrees Society to open a chapter in various cities has been humbling and overwhelming.
Meet Emily Merrell, The Founder of Six Degrees Society
Emily, also lovingly referred to as "20 questions" has always loved figuring out people's stories.
Upon graduating from Denison University, she moved to Buenos Aires to master her Spanish and worked in various industries (ask her about Malbec). Following her return to New York City, she landed in the Fashion world specializing in vents & Marketing working at Ralph Lauren, Club Monaco, Tory Burch and INTERMIX. In 2014 she dreamt up Six Degrees Society and in 2016 she made her dream a full-time business. In her free time, you can find her exploring new restaurants, drinking bold bottles of wine, taking early morning workout classes, planning her next trip or playing the name game. Follow her adventures at emerrell09.
What's The Pain Point Of Networking?
We've been conditioned to make connections by hitting the "connect" button. In-person connections are becoming more and more challenging and transactional. Networking can be anxiety filled and feel devoid of human relations. Six Degrees Society aims to make connecting authentic and easy by pre-matching who you meet before you even walk in the room. Additionally, by having individuals submit their bios in advance the guests get a sense of who will be in the room with them and eliminates the need to hand out cards to everyone they see.
Our Answer: Curated Networking & Awesome Programming
With these challenges in mind Emily hopes to eliminate them through in-person event programming, helpful online resources and the creation of a community. The beauty of the Six Degrees Society events is that there are like-minded individuals in a room that want to help each other. Through membership and events these individuals have come to form friendships, business partners and so much more.
From fireside chats, to 101 style events, at all Six Degrees Society events attendees will walk away with a strong sense of community.
How your support will help Six Degrees Society
Emily, a natural connector, makes the connections for all of the markets manually. The need for technology advances and a second matcher is imperative to scale the business.
- Developing a membership platform to help organize previous event matches with the ability to sort by industry/when you met/job title
- A part time assistant to help take on event logistics and planning and manage sponsorship

Here’s what some members have said:
“Six Degrees Society seemed to fall into my lap at the perfect time in my new freelancing career and I knew immediately this was a group I wanted to be a part of. Networking in the fashion industry is somewhat unheard of so finding a group of open and engaging women has been beyond refreshing. From the variety of event topics to the amazing network of women I leave every event feeling so energized and inspired! Emily has a such gift for connecting people and is one of the most warm and welcoming people I have ever met. She is so aware of relevant topics and seems to have a six sense for just the right people to match at events. Joining SDS has been one of the best investments I have ever made! My only wish is that I found it earlier!”- Leigh Toothaker
"I could write a novel about how much I love Six Degrees Society and how much of an impact it has had on my life. I have met close friends, mentors, role models, and confidants through Six Degrees Society. There is something special about Six Degrees Society that can't be replicated. You instantly feel connected to the like-minded women at the events and, instead of small talk, people have real, authentic, meaningful conversations. The women at Six Degrees Society are supportive, energetic, vibrant, and caring. I always leave events knowing I'll stay in touch with at least one of the women I met that night and, more often than not, all of them! There are women I meet up with for weekly coffee dates, long walks in Central Park, dinners, workout classes, and ballets. I definitely can't say that for industry networking events I've attended. Emily is one of the most thoughtful people I know and she is a supper-connector. It's so clear that she gets her energy from connecting women and making them feel included and supported. The level of care, attention, and innovation she puts into events and match-making is unparalleled. Get ready to find your friends with benefits!" - Elana Lyn, Founder of ElanaLyn.com
