The SisterYard's Coconut Cold Brew Coffee

Hi. It’s us, Yami and Tina, sisters and co-founders of The SisterYard. We make Coconut Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate using 100% coconut water, toasted coconut, and sustainably-sourced coffee from a local woman-owned producer. How did we come up with this idea, you ask? Well, we were both working day jobs that started super early in the morning (think 4AM alarms), while balancing our side hustle of hosting cooking classes. Between the early wake up calls and the late night planning sessions, we needed a coffee that both jolted us in the morning and kept us going in the evenings. Something delicious, easy to make, and somewhat healthful (Tina is a dietician and Yami is a Chef by trade, so what we put into our bodies is very important to us).  Funny thing is, we were never willing to give up taste or nutrition for the sake of time (or the lack thereof). Our coffee needed to be tasty, comforting, and better for us than the standard cup.

WE BUMPED INTO A PROBLEM AND WE DECIDED TO SOLVE IT:

There are a handful of coffee concentrates on the market, but most are made from unsustainable ingredients, contain added sugars or other artificial ingredients, are harsh on your digestive system, or contain preservatives to make them shelf-stable. Our goal is to introduce a healthier, tastier, and fresher alternative to a wider market. Our cold brew is always ready for you when you need it. The coconut water and coconut chips give our coffee a unique sweetness and caramel/chocolate flavor, avoiding the need to add any sugar or syrups. With only 2g of natural sugars per serving and added electrolytes and hydration from the coconut water used during the brewing process, you can feel good about sipping The SisterYard at any time.

WHAT IS THE MARKET SIZE OPPORTUNITY?

It’s hard to wrap our heads around how big this opportunity could be. 64% of the adult population in the U.S. drinks a cup of coffee every day. Millennials and Gen-Z now account for 44% of the total U.S. coffee consumption. These are conscious consumers who are looking to enjoy products that are good for both themselves and the environment. Between increased access to online e-commerce platforms, traditional grocery and retail stores, and delivery services such as Amazon, Fresh Direct, and GoPuff, we want to be the leader in on-demand coffee and provide access to the forward thinking, thoughtful consumer wherever they shop. We want to be the coffee for everyone - parents, students, athletes, hardworking professionals, brothers, and sisters.

Our Coconut Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate is a staple in your refrigerator. It’s ready-to-serve, convenient, exciting, and something you look forward to enjoying every morning (or as an afternoon pick-me-up or cocktail before a fun night out). Our product contains no added sugars, natural sweetness from the coconut, and lower acidity due to a higher PH from our brewing process, making it more gentle on your digestive system. 

WHY ARE WE SEEKING FUNDING AND HOW WILL WE SPEND IT?

We were born and raised in Venezuela and moved to Miami with our family 11 years ago. As immigrants, hardworking professionals, and now business owners, we see the value in every penny and know how important this funding would be to the growth of our business. 

We started The SisterYard during the pandemic after Tina lost her job and needed to figure out how to make ends meet. It was a simple operation out of our home in Miami. Yami was working on getting the recipe just right, while Tina was capturing beautiful photos and focusing on our marketing and social media presence. We started doing local deliveries “Milk (Wo)man” style, dropping bottles at our customers' doorsteps in the wee hours of the morning, and trading new bottles for old bottles thanks to our recycling program. We then began selling at local farmers markets, partnering with other like minded small businesses, and working day and night to expand our presence. Soon after we launched, the coconut cold brew started to get more attention than anticipated. We saw a window for growth and were presented with an opportunity to move to NYC.  We took a leap of faith, and moved to Manhattan in March 2021, determined to work hard and be part of the revitalization of the city we always dreamed about living in. 

Our short-term goal is to move into a commercial space where we can improve and expand operations. The coconut cold brew coffee concentrate must be kept cold, making a bigger refrigeration space essential to increase production volume, avoid spoilage, and store freezer packs to allow for shipping to other states.

To become available nationwide permanently, we need to invest in bulk quantities of sustainable shipping supplies including boxes, insulated box panels, and freezer packs, as well as our key ingredients: coconut water, fresh coconut, and coffee beans. 

We are here to make big moves in the coffee, food, and hospitality industries. We strive to set an example and to empower small and large companies.

All it takes is a couple crazy people who want to choose what’s in their everyday cup of coffee. It takes two people who not only care about quality ingredients but also about where those ingredients are sourced from. We strive, and will continue to be, an honest company that cares about making products worth your while as well as the planet’s.
