The Shona Project: Scale 2022

The Shona Project are on a mission to ensure that today's Irish Girls become tomorrows strong confident and curious young women.

There are 250,000 teenage girls in Ireland. Negative experiences during these years can be detrimental to their long term and short term wellbeing and have a far-reaching effect on society and large.

Here's the impact...

• 87% of girls aged 10-17 in Ireland have low self-esteem. This is one of the highest figures in the world.
• 1 in 3 young people in Ireland struggle with anxiety and depression. Ireland has the highest rate of death by suicide among teenage girls in Europe
• By the age of 13, 1/2 of girls will have given up playing sport
• Only 14% of Irish companies have a female CEO
• Only 18% of applications for leadership roles in 2017 were from women

That's why we're here!

Since our launch in 2016 we've created a huge impact...

• We've worked with almost 20,000 girls in schools all over Ireland
• We've provided 30,000 copies of our Survival Handbook FREE to girls starting secondary school
• We created the amazing SHINE festival, which has grown from 350 attendees in 2018 to 40,000 digitally in 2021
• We have developed a summer school, a one week, immersive experience which has been piloted and is transforming the lives of the girls who attend.

We celebrate women from all over the world, those who succeed and those who overcome. those who lead and those who think, whose who win and those who learn. We share our stories so that we don't feel alone. We laugh. learn, try and cry together, by providing girls with information, advice and a safe place to share their stories.

To date, we have been funded through grant aid and corporate support. In order for us to continue to scale, we are adopting a social enterprise model, growing SHINE festival and our summer schools, and providing supports to parents in terms of training and networking.
