Project Description

The creation of Salsa Stories started in 2017 out of the desire to combine my greatest passions: production and salsa dancing. My mission is to preserve the history and culture of salsa by inspiring people to practice the universal language of dancing.

Salsa Stories is a public event that combines TV show screenings with live music and dance performances.

When the City Council passed a legislation that allows for artists to apply for permits to perform outdoors in open spaces, I saw an opportunity to take action and help rebuild my dance community from the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. Applications were opened on March 1st 2021. I applied and was granted permits to host events in Manhattan during the Summer 2021.

Before the pandemic hit, NYC was home to hundreds of social dancing spots where people from all five boroughs and surrounding states came together, usually in dance studios, ballrooms, and outdoor public spaces.

As we are all well aware, the pandemic has drastically affected cultural venues, small businesses, and the real estate industry among many other sectors. The closure of these businesses has greatly jeopardized the very existence of social dancing in the city. Iconic venues such as the nightclub Copacabana (1940-2020) were forced to close their doors and the dance community is now faced with fear and uncertainty with no prospect of what lies ahead. With the vast majority of the traditional venues that hosted long-run socials having closed, I identified the urgency in the salsa dance community to restore a fragile cultural identity and I was fortunate to be presented with an opportunity to help reassess the dance culture. Once again, NYC is home to reinventing and innovating, as it did back in the ’70s with Salsa and Hip Hop. Social dancers are now faced with a major cultural identity crisis and are in desperate need to reconnect to themselves through their communities. As a social dancer myself I decided to rebuild my community from this loss instead of passively mourning it. My passion for this social movement, my vast experience in event production, combined with an array of invaluable key contacts cultivated over the years is the perfect combination for a successful endeavor. My background was shaped in these cultural communities that created these traditions and my work symbiotically coexists in synergy as an extension of it.

The Campaign FAQs

What happens if entirety of the funds cannot be raised?

The fundraising campaign goal covers for elements that composes the ideal entertainment experience. In the event of this goal not been met, there will be adjustments to the amount of performances and elements that can be cut and still run a beautiful event.

If the campaign surpasses the goal, how will the funds be used?

Salsa Stories will be a recurring part of the public cultural agenda of the City of New York. Fundraising that exceeds the goal will be used in the next event calendar's pre-production budget.

I believe in this project and I want to contribute but I prefer donating to nonprofits.

Salsa Stories has a fiscal sponsor: NYWIFT – New York Women In Film & Television. Donations through their nonprofit organization can be an alternative. If this is how you would like to contribute please contact [email protected] for details.

How are the events taking place during a pandemic?

According to NYC Mayor’s Office of Citywide Event Coordination and Management’s Covid-19 safety guidelines, an event or performance must comply with any applicable requirements on outdoor cultural events and gatherings set by federal, state, or New York City law or guidelines or other directives from the governor or any government agency. As of March 19, the outdoor social gathering limit is 500 people pursuant to Executive Order.

In order to limit crowding during the COVID-19 pandemic, NYC Emergency Executive Order 130, as extended, temporarily restricts the NYPD from issuing sound device permits to an applicant utilizing a stage or video screen. Stages and video screens are permissible without amplified sound. To solve this restriction the event relies on transmitting the sound from the screening to individual headsets.

All applicants were required to submit a COVID-19 Safety Affirmation Plan. The plan includes physical distancing, face coverings, hygiene, a communication plan for employees, volunteers, and attendees, and mandatory health screening assessments for employees and/or volunteers prior to the event.

Non-essential gathering limits are subject to change based on State and City law or guidelines, and events are subject to capacity limits and cancellation based on changes in law or guidelines. These restrictions are expected to change as the city progresses into higher vaccination rates. The Citywide Event Coordination and Management is constantly issuing updates regarding the restrictions. As the city progresses into normalcy the permit restrictions will be lifted/adjusted accordingly.
