Project Description
- Mission- Impowering women to generate additional income through improving poultry production.
- Problem solving- This project investigated the genetics of chicken, disease risk and husbandry to understand what can be done to improve productivity.
- The global poultry feed market size was valued USD 175.9 Billion in 2018, growing at CAGR of 4.5% over the forecast period. The demand can primarily be attributed to the increasing poultry farming to cater to the rising demand for chicken meat and eggs globally.
- The main challenges of indigenous poultry sub-sector include low genetic potential, low productivity, poor feeding with little supplementation, disease, poor management, and lack of organized market. At institutional level the sub-sector is constrained by inadequate provision of extension, research and development.
- An agreement with a poultry company will be required before financing can be arranged and construction can begin. Building chicken houses from scratch is expensive, with a single unit averaging anywhere from $200,000-$280,000 or more, including site preparation, construction, equipment, wiring and plumbing. In addition, companies may prefer more than one chicken house per farm. With these equipment, a farmer's land home and other asset's can be tied into large financial loans. It is imperative to meet with lending agencies to determine the availability of financing, interest rates and payment schedules before commitments are finalized.
