Project Description
The Northeast Arts Commune is a communal creative studio that hosts the necessary working space, tools/equipment, and storage to help keep artists, makers, and creative types on their grind. We offer 24:7 member access + wide variety of art classes & creative workshops open to the public.
Artists, makers, and creative types need a safe, effective, and affordable place to gather and create at any hour of the day. We're here to provide an innovative and accessible shared-space art studio that encourages and reinforces the natural creativity that lies in all of us.

As Minneapolis continues to change both rapidly and dramatically we need to protect an affordable space for our community. Our area is full of makers with exciting creative ideas and not always the right tools or space to bring these dreams to fruition. We deserve an environment that is dedicated to making these ideas happen no matter where you are in your creative journey.
Commune Membership: $85 per month
Driven by shared neighborly values and a passion for a creative future. Membership at The Northeast Arts Commune is access to a space like no other. Supporting The Northeast Arts Commune is an investment both in your community and in yourself!
24-hour accessibility · 12,000 sq ft+ modern industrial studio · near Northeast Minneapolis Arts District · personal entry card · open communal working areas · smaller, more intimate shared working spaces · spacious tables & attractive lighting · spray booth access · dedicated, large open-face cubby for all members w/ lockers available for rent (+$5 per month) · drying & storage racks · small computer lab · show/sell your work in optional quarterly galley showings · members receive 10% off classes/workshops
Official membership is granted upon signing a studio rules contract passing a background check--creating a space that is safe for all of our members is our first priority.
Classes at The Northeast Arts Commune:
The Northeast Arts Commune thrives on the intent of discovering and bringing out the creativity that lies in all of us while connecting people through art + imagination. Our space is designed to be multipurpose and our classes inspire and remind us of our ability to learn new things. Taught by local artists, we'll offer reoccurring and rotating classes of various mediums at price ranges from $12-$100+
The Northeast Arts Commune will also offer four membership add-ons:
Ceramics Access, Glass Fusing Access, Photography Studio Access, & Darkroom Access. These add-ons are designed with a creative in mind who already has prior background/skill in the desired area.
Ceramics Access: + $65 per month
Access to the pottery wheels in the communal space at any time as well as the wheels in the ceramics room, except at minimal posted hours when classes are taking place. Monthly clay/firing allowance. The Northeast Arts Commune will run a regular firing schedule in which members can sign up to have their pieces fired. Some clay, glaze, and firing included in the membership price. Additional clay available for purchase.
Glass Fusing Access: +$65 per month
Access to the glass fusing storage space and lockers. Glass fusing passes come with a borrowed tool kit. Monthly glass/firing allowance + use of glass scraps. The Northeast Arts Commune will run a regular firing schedule in which members can sign up to have their pieces fired. Some glass and firing are included in the membership price. Additional glass is available for purchase.
Darkroom Access: +$45 per month
Darkroom access--chemicals included. BYO photo paper.
Photography Studio Access: +$45 per month
Reoccurring scheduled solo studio time: 15 hours per month. Access to white syke, black photo background, and green screen.

We can't sneak address specifics quite yet...but, the space we're looking at is located within this little black box:
By the people for the people, The Northeast Arts Commune is a member-based studio, communal-working space, and a public classroom. You'll help provide the community around the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District with a very needed space that doesn't exist yet.
The Northeast Arts Commune looks to stimulate economic growth within the nearby arts community by creating a workspace for creatives to explore their passions alongside providing opportunities to show/sell their work. And, by hiring local artists to teach our classes. Our teaching team will be made up of artists with all sorts of different specialties and backgrounds.
You can fund a grassroots community and help protect affordable access for artists to create. The Northeast Arts Commune has been built on the principle of searching out local solutions and partnering with many small businesses to create our space.
We want you to know the direct, wonderful, impact your money is making. We've carefully crunched the numbers and nailed down exactly what we need:
There's an, about 8% fee that will be taken off the top of our $85,000 goal for iFundwomen + CC processing fees. Something that's neat about iFundwomen is that they reinvest 20% of their crowdfunding fees back into amazing women lead projects on their platform. Your donation is a gift that keeps on giving!
Our projected buildout cost is $100,000+. The building owner is helping us, initially, in funding a hefty portion of the buildout. (that cost will be tacked onto our monthly rent, of course)
We're looking to put down $30,000 to finish negotiating/signing our lease + downpayment on buildout costs. Then, we'll have about $48,000 to secure the various equipment & supply needs and other start-up costs.
The true power of The Northeast Arts Commune resides within our community. We want our students and members to feel as much a part of building The Northeast Arts Commune as we do. We’ve partnered with iFundWomen to get the job done right.

The Campaign FAQs
What are The Northeast Arts Commune hours? Our members will have 24-hour access to the space. Our classes, that are open to the public, will be offered at various times and days depending on which class. We will have daytime, evening and weekend class options.
What are the age requirements? Memberships are available to those 18+. Our monthly open house events will be open to all ages and we're also excited to offer various rotating classes for adults and children alike.
What's the parking situation like? Choosing a location with ample parking was a top priority. Free parking in the lot next to the building with free parking on streets nearby as well.
Why are you called The Northeast Arts Commune but you're opening in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood?? We looked for about 11 months for a location in Northeast MPLS with no success. 😰 A few places were interested in having us but did not have enough parking to spare. When we fiiiiinally found this location in Marcy-Holmes we were already LLCed under ‘The Northeast Arts Commune LLC’ for about a year. :/ Our plan was to ask our members if they would prefer to rename it ‘The Minneapolis Arts Commune’ once we have folks signed up. Can members bring guests to The Northeast Arts Commune? To protect our members and the fluid working environment, members are not allowed to bring guests. **EXCEPT for the guest of photography studio member doing a shoot** We'd love for your guest to check us out for a class or visit our monthly open house.
Can I come see the space when you open? Yes! Please do, Get the first peak by purchasing a ticket to our VIP party. Come take a class. Otherwise, please check us out at our monthly open house.
Are outside food and beverages allowed in the space? You can get hungry sometimes while creating, ya know??! Yes, outside food and beverages are ok. Members will have access to a small kitchenette area. Food and beverage rules will be clearly stated in the membership agreement.
How can I get my membership card? About a month before we open we'll host a couple of membership mixers where you can get a quick tour of the space and pick up your ID card
How can I purchase a membership add on? All membership add on's include a various monthly material budget. You'll pay for this add on monthly once we open.
Are there any fitness classes I can take in the space? Our classrooms are designed to be multipurpose and we've chatted with a few instructors about offering yoga/fitness classes. More info to come soon!
Do you have any partnerships with other local businesses? Our idea is collaboration over competition. As a member, your ties with The Northeast Arts Commune are long-lasting and far-reaching.
Can I gift a membership or reward? Heck yes! Thinking of a creative in your life that could benefit? Offered perks for supporting The Northeast Arts Commune make great gifts. Providing access to this community is an opportunity for the creative type in your life to further develop, network and connect. You are able to put any of our rewards in another person's name.
