Project Description

"Allowing all students to embrace their natural curiosity of learning; while developing core skills through stimulating, artistic, & creative experiences."

Introduction

"Music is good for the soul"

It was 1995 and my love for music was growing quickly.  I was a member of the youth choir at my family church, family gatherings were filled with music & laughter, and OutKast was letting everyone know that "the South got something to say".  Creative expression was all around me!

Self portrait in The Musical Corner at-home studio (2020)

I needed to hear, learn, and feel music all of the time.

I had no idea how much more the arts could impact my life until one sunny day....

Arriving at my Grandmother's house before my aunts & uncles was like winning the television lottery.  As I flipped through the channels, my ears were caught by the sound of a roaring applause.

There sat a symphony orchestra....the conductor slowly raised his baton.....and as the sounds of Igor Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" began to fill the air, my calling to music was complete.

The musicians were talking to each other without words.  It was the most beautiful conversation & language that I had ever heard!  I knew from that moment forward that I was destined to be a musician.

When I saw the instrument that was playing a beautiful solo, I said "I will not play that thing. It's bigger than me!"

Two years after that faithful day, I began my journey with my first instrument....."that thing"....the bassoon.

Expanding my musical knowledge & technique, I was a member of the concert band (bassoon), marching band (drum line/drum captain), indoor marching drum line, and percussion ensemble while in high school.

During my collegiate years, I was a mentor for Big Brother Big Sister of Rutherford County & bassoonist on various album recordings with the Middle Tennessee State University Wind Ensemble.

I am also a proud member of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, Inc.

My name is Kimberly Cook, and I am the owner of The Musical Corner, Montessori Music & Arts.

Those very words started the vision of The Musical Corner as I danced with my youngest brother during our childhood.

After being diagnosed with Autism as a toddler,  music therapy became largely beneficial to his life.  Sharing drums, rhythms, & popular songs/tunes in music & movement were the perfect avenues for us to communicate to one another, while embracing our individual growth & learning curves.

Family of Creativity

With our mother having 11 siblings & loads of extended family, our family was filled with so many ways to learn & find your voice.

One of our eldest uncles is a self-taught musician.  He is also the first person that I ever saw playing instruments!

He is primarily a guitarist (bass, acoustic, & electric), though he loves to explore with all instruments.  His love & happiness for the arts transcended over to both my brother & I.

We would spend countless hours talking about music, playing matching games with his guitar strings, & discovering new sounds while creating music together.  Exploring & learning about music through him provided a safe haven for us to learn & be creatively expressive.

It Was All A Dream

In 2014, I moved to Atlanta to further my career & teaching abilities.

This time allowed me to build rapport with the surrounding communities through private lessons, further my skills as a music educator, & learn/grow in Montessori Philosophy.

As I was growing through my experiences as an educator, I was able to work closely with preschool aged children in the Montessori school setting.   My time working with children through therapy with music reminded me so much of the joy that I shared with my brother throughout our childhood.

Teaching & connecting with families with students of all ages & backgrounds brought endless joy!

In 2020, The Musical Corner, LLC was officially formed.

TMC

Following the Montessori philosophy, The Musical Corner, Montessori Music & Arts provides stimulating, artistic, and creative experiences for all ages.

All classes & lessons are uniquely designed to provide sensory balance, while encouraging the growth of all core skills & milestones.

We are the only black-owned Montessori music & arts in Georgia (possibly the entire nation)!

TMC

Throughout the pandemic, students have been guided through these experiences virtually, in the comfort of their home, & at professional recording studios.

Being able to connect with families throughout the nation is amazing! Their desire to grow through Montessori with their children grows more & more everyday.

Today, I am asking for your help to fund our continued growth for in-home & virtual services throughout Metro Atlanta and surrounding areas!

This campaign will directly support families, artists, educators, and others who preserve & promote learning through the arts.  Everyone deserves affordable, quality education & guidance.   Everyone deserves to be able to enjoy learning & expressing themselves, no matter the age or background.

In a time where the quality of education is vastly depleting, it is showing that the Montessori philosophy is paving a new path for the future.

Without a way for the youth to learn & grow as they develop through life, we are in danger of losing our creative voices, interpersonal skills, and love & appreciation for the arts & each other forever.

Your gift today will make it possible for countless others to pick up an instrument– a camera – a paint brush – sing louder – and to share their love for learning.

  1. Surpass our campaign goal!!!
  2. Promote to all of Metro Atlanta & surrounding areas.
  3. Purchase equipment (music instruments, photography equipment, art supplies, etc)
  4. Provide affordable tuition & instrument/equipment rental for in-home/outdoor & virtual lessons/classes
  5. Provide scholarship/tuition funding to low-income students
  6. Provide healthy learning environments & opportunities for educators and students as they grow in their field!
  7. Build music & arts schools throughout the Metro Atlanta and surrounding areas!

By surpassing our campaign goal, we will be able to offer affordable Montessori education & instruments to countless families!

To ensure that our educators & families are able to further their affordable Montessori lifestyle, we will also have a online market store for purchasing music & Montessori-inspired items.

Surpassing this campaign will allows us to bring affordable Montessori education & lifestyle to countless families.

Being located in an extremely high volume/populated area will provide endless success to our mission.

Students of our photography studio will meet weekly in a designated location to capture the beauty of the city around them.

Through out public music performances & art gallery showcases, students and families of all backgrounds will be able to connect, grow, & share their love of learning through the arts.

Through the generous support from various donors, we have been able to operate throughout the pandemic.  I am now asking for your help in raising our first reach goal of $75,000 to continue our growth throughout Metro Atlanta & surrounding areas.

And together, WE CAN DO IT!!!

Every dollar raised will go directly towards all start-up costs & sustaining of our new home long-term.  Start-up costs include:

  • promotional cost
  • hiring & training new staff
  • TMC scholarship funding for low-income families
  • music instruments/art supplies/photography equipment
  • learning material

We do not have to stop at $75K!  In fact, anything above this goal will be allocated towards:

  • expanding online/in-home services throughout Georgia
  • funding our tuition assistance/scholarship program for low-income families

Imagine a world without music for sporting events...on your phone....coming from passing cars as you walked down the street or relaxed in the park.....no concerts for you to attend.

Sounds like that life would be flat. *musician joke*

If there is one thing that this pandemic has shown is the lack of quality education, in all areas.  Teachers & families need more resources & sensory balanced outlets for the children.

The absence of music & arts programs in schools leaves an empty space....a space that was once used for learning, growth, creative expression, & genuine camaraderie.  Halls that were once filled with colorful art & sounds from the band are becoming colorless & mute.

Though traditional music programs have shown success over decades, they are highly focused on students learning in one particular way.  With every person being their own individual, I feel that it is time to bring back music & arts programs back with the Montessori philosophy.

The current development of Montessori schools opens countless doors for nationwide growth of The Musical Corner.

As we are the only operating Montessori Music & Arts in Georgia (possibly the entire nation), our market for success is enormous!

By introducing music & arts to students through the Montessori philosophy, students are given the respect of learning on their learning curve.  By feeling the appreciation of each other through their shared love of the arts, students are more inclined to feel confident in themselves.  That confidence then pours over into their interest for learning, growing as a musician & person, working well with others, and setting positive examples to their peers as they learn together.

The safe haven for The Musical Corner, Montessori Music & Arts will be a beautiful space to learn, create, explore, express, & grow.  We appreciate your help to make this dream a reality with your best gift today!

To provide additional support to families to learn more about the Montessori philosophy & living an affordable Montessori lifestyle, I personally host a LIVE virtual webinar (#MontessoriMonday).

Preserver of a Beautiful Culture

Over 20 years ago, I was formally introduced to the bassoon.  Though I did not have a private teacher, I was determined to teach myself to play such a beautiful instrument.

I have had the honor of traveling & performing throughout Europe with Spirit of America National Honor Band during my high school years.

Going on to perform & record with some of the most talented musicians, I have been blessed to become a professional bassoonist who currently plays with various orchestras throughout Georgia.  Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to also learn drums/percussion, oboe, piano, ukulele, cello, clarinet, saxophone, & harmonica.

As a young child, I was blessed to have been fostered to be a life-long learner.  My exposure to all genres & artists made learning school subjects & about life exciting.

For several years, I have been a music educator throughout Georgia to children & adults of all levels, covering multiple instruments & genres.

After years of being a Montessori music teacher, I decided to finalize my dream by bringing the arts to the hearts & homes of others through the Montessori philosophy.  I have worked closely with other Montessori music educators & Certified Montessori teachers to develop the perfect curriculum for the success of The Musical Corner, Montessori Music & Arts, our students, & our staff.

As a professional musician/educator & advocate for providing resources & support to families, it is my calling to provide the arts through Montessori to more families & educators.

The Musical Corner is my contribution to the preservation of quality education, the arts, & fostering life-long learners.  The art of creative expression & music are in every aspect of life; building core skills, academics, professional development, etc.

The arts are the voice for the voiceless....a contributor for learning & happiness.

My youngest brother was, is, and all ways will be my inspiration for fulfilling the need of connecting with families & Special Needs children through the arts.  For it was the arts that provided him the ability to be comfortable as he developed through life; later to become one of the smartest students of his high school graduating class.

From the moment that I felt music growing our connection deeper as siblings, I knew that I was destined to provide a safe haven to those who share the love of being life-long learners & lovers of the arts.

With an abundance of gratitude and an open heart, I share my dream with you today.  In honor of the arts & your love of providing quality education to the youth, I ask that you share this campaign with others.

I am beyond blessed to be on this journey toward providing the best education to students, their families, & our staff.

With your support, our future to provide quality, life-long education will shine brighter than ever!

When I decided to officially form The Musical Corner, I did not expect the pandemic to hit as well.  All active plans ceased & adjustments to virtual teaching became our primary focus.

My determination to successfully see this through is unmatched.

With the volunteering & donation contribution of the community, I have been able to successfully launch a small portion of our virtual services.  Previous donation contributions covered the cost of tuition & learning material for low-income students.

I feel that the major challenges with this project have passed, as we have been able to maintain success through the pandemic.  Our support system grows stronger every day!  It is so exciting to know that families & other educators are wanting to learn the arts through Montessori.

As we continue to grow, we will apply for every available grant to ensure that our safe haven is all ways here to foster life-long learning.

On behalf of The Musical Corner, I would like to give my deepest appreciation for all of your donations!  I would like to also give a huge appreciation to God for blessing the world with the life of my youngest brother.  TMC was created from a vision, to be a safe haven for all unique children/families to learn & express themselves.  I am beyond blessed to be his big sister & share our love of learning with everyone!
