The mission for Mindful Black Women is to support survivors of mental health struggles by spreading awareness, ending the mental health stigma, and educating the community on how to achieve positive mental health, while teaching women and girls how to journal, meditate, and live mindfully. We are a wellness brand that caters to Black women and provides actionable steps for a variety of mental health issues not usually talked about in the black community. By integrating spirituality and brain science into these experiences, our platform provides a unique perspective on maintaining mental health as a black woman. 

As a black neuroscience Ph.D. student at Columbia University, and a certified yoga and meditation teacher, I am uniquely qualified to provide this resource to my community. My goal to not only cultivate better mental health via meditation, journaling, yoga, and breathwork, but also to provide knowledge about wellness I have learned throughout my formal education. Until recently, there has been little research and investigation into the mental health struggles we face as a community. Now, we are seeing that our brains have changed at a molecular level due to the systemic oppression we face and have been facing for generations. As a scientist, I wanted a way to share the new and emerging resources regarding African Americans to increase awareness, and help combat mental health stigmas. 

I have seen first hand how helping women of color increase their psychological knowledge directly benefits them. By providing strategies and tools to better combat stress and anxiety, as well as developing a community of support, the black community can learn to better cope and rise above the rising stress faced from anti-Blackness in the United States and around the world. 

Mindful Black Women is in need of financial support to be able to provide a high quality platform for its users and prove the numerous benefits this community will bring. We want to be able to fund an easy to use website that allows for community members to access free resources, information, activities, and therapist directory. 

There is a saying in the world of psychology that states “Therapy is for everyone.” However, what is not talked about is how therapy wasn’t made for everyone. There are several problems that arise when it comes to accessing quality mental health care. And even if you find a good therapist and have a way to get there, it can be very expensive (over 100 dollars per session). And online therapy is a cheaper alternative but it still will run someone about 200+ dollars a month, something that a lot of young women can’t afford. That being said, Mindful Black Women has a goal to fully fund 10 community member’s therapy for at least one year. To do this, we would need support to raise enough money to fund these members of our community. Getting a year of therapy can change someone’s life. And usually, after mental obstacles are addressed, accessibility to mental health care also increases. 

Mindful Black Women wants to not only collaborate with other experts in the mental health space, we want to host hybrid virtual and in person mindfulness events. To do this, we need support to be able to have the resources and people needed to execute successful events that benefit our community members. We also want to be able to host these events in a safe space to further cultivate the community environment. To keep the costs of these events from 0 to low cost, financial support is necessary to be successful in our efforts. 

On our platform we will have active communication with our community. Community members will be able to share mental health and wellness content, in addition to what they receive from us. The platform as a whole will serve as an all in one place for members to find their wellness needs, such as mental wellness tips, articles, and videos, that will be accessible from anywhere. We aim to fill community members with a sense of purpose as they are a part of building this self sustaining website community. And we hope for this to be a place of learning and support for years to come. 

It would be very impactful to invest in this community and the power it has to make a positive difference.
