Mighty Kind is a magazine to inspire a global community of kids who care.
We celebrate world cultures, share big ideas in personal development and work toward making the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time. We focus on kindness and compassion as a foundation for anti-bias learning and conversations while aiming to provide a platform for diverse voices and perspectives.
Each issue of our 64-page publication is full of illustrated stories, fun activities and actionable volunteer opportunities to empower kids to tap into their natural capacity to love and learn while having fun. Our high-quality, quarterly publication is geared toward children and the grown-ups who mentor them.
If you think about it, it is human nature to be afraid of or reject the things we don’t know or understand. But once we learn enough to find common ground with people different from ourselves, it’s much easier to learn to respect, and maybe even appreciate, what was once strange and uncomfortable. We can learn (and therefore teach) kindness!
I'm Nadine, co-founder of Mighty Kind. As the daughter of a first generation American and a homeschooling mother of four children, I knew it was my responsibility as a parent to curate experiences for my children to foster cultural curiosity and appreciate and respect differences in order to develop empathy and have approachable, but meaningful conversations about bias and racism and how we can play a role in combatting them. If I wanted to help my kids grow into the kind of people who saw differences as opportunities, I needed to help them take adventures into the unknown.
I truly believe that we all have an incredible capacity for kindness. Children hold so much power to do good in their small hands. Being mighty isn’t about doing great things or big things but doing what you can with what you have, wherever you may be. Our goal is to empower them to do kind things on purpose because they've trained their brain and heart to look for those chances to understand and help others. There is no act of kindness too small that the world isn’t better for it.
Our magazine has grown its readership over the last year, but we are still very much in the start-up phase with our entire staff volunteering their time and talents. We have prioritized our finances in a way that allow us to compensate our artist and writer contributors with a stipend as well as cover production, printing, and fulfillment costs.
With these funds, we will be able to plan for the longevity of the magazine for the next year and beyond, begin to compensate our incredible staff, pay market rates to our contributors, and work to expand our efforts beyond the pages of the magazine by partnering and support charitable organizations doing important work.
All rewards including our first three issues will be ready to ship in October. Rewards including Issue 4 will release in November in time for holiday gift-giving. All rewards beyond Issue 4 will be released quarterly in 2021. Please allow for possible shipping delays outside of our control as the current global pandemic has the potential to affect shipping times.
In each ad-free issue of Mighty Kind, we create and curate content based on four main pillars designed to teach, engage, and inspire.
1. Issue Theme: Each issue includes feature articles and activities that revolve around a shared human experience. In Issue 1, we explored greetings around the globe.
2. Global Cultures: Next we take a deeper look into the traditions and way of life in a specific country or region. The first issue highlighted Mexico and included maps, facts, recipes, notes from a traveling kid-reporter, a penpal, and more.
3. The Big Idea: We then guide children through a personal growth concept to help them develop a positive sense of self and a strong sense of moral character. In Issue 1, we covered diversity—what it is, why it matters—and provided activities to engage curious minds.
4. Service: Finally, we encourage children to take action through service and volunteer work. Issue 1 included a guide for making DIY greeting cards and included a list of organizations that collect cards on behalf of those in need of some cheer. In this section, we also highlight the good work of kids around the globe showing our readers that you don't have to be big to be mighty.
Our core content is developed for children ages 5-11. We also have included a grown-up section for parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, and anyone seeking tools to support kids in developing empathy and cultural awareness. Mighty Kind is now in several elementary school and public libraries across the United States and has been used as social studies, anti-bias, and social-emotional curriculum in both traditional classrooms and homeschool settings alike.
