Learning should be easy, fun and accessible for all students.
There are 8 MM students across the United States that are considered chronically absent each year (meaning, they miss 10% or more of school in any given year). With COVID-19, those numbers are set to increase substantially. Our mobile video app allows high-risk, chronically absent students to watch short 2 min 15-second videos that cover fundamental academic concepts that they routinely miss so that they do not fall further behind. School districts spend $12 billion annually to retain these students. With COVID-19, schools are struggling to engage students in a significant manner, particularly schools with low levels of funding. The students who were already struggling are set to fall further behind. Zoom has proven to be challenging for many teachers, however, over 60% of TikTok users are Gen Z, for instance. Our platform leverages the best aspects of social media (short, concise, engaging, videos) to target our student population. The best description of our app would be a combination of TikTok/Duolingo for education.
Learnabi is building a mobile video platform that will be accessible to any student to view and download content on to their phones. We make use of learning profiles (based on years of data we've collected thus far on best practices) and learning algorithms to determine the best lesson to provide each student. Our content is engaging, relevant, and personalized. Tech allows us to scale our product to students all across the United States who've been directly impacted by COVID-19. We model our app after gaming and social media applications to make content engaging and interactive.
Learnabi is raising $10,000 to build out the first phase of the app.
Our biggest asset, by far, is our dedicated team members. We’ve been fortunate to attract a team of 18 individuals since starting Learnabi. Our team comes to us with technical expertise and experience in personalized learning and learning analytics. Through our partnership with NYU Steinhardt School of Education and Columbia University, Teacher’s College’s Learning Analytics program, we’ve recruited a series of Masters and Ph.D. candidates who specialize in the education field. The learning analytics program at Columbia University has been an integral part of our app development this summer. We’ve recruited almost exclusively from Teachers College at Columbia University and NYU Steinhardt. Our staff also have the cultural understanding to work with our population of students.
The Learnabi Team would like to thank everyone who has been on this journey with us as we strive to make learning accessible and equitable for our population of students. It has been three years since we started Learnabi and we would not have made it to this point without each and every one of you. Thank you for your continuous support and we look forward to making you all proud when the app launches!
