IPATH: Pursuing Healthy Mobility

Mission

The International Professional Association for Transport & Health (IPATH) is a platform for transdisciplinary and multi-sector professionals working at the intersection of transport and health. The aim of IPATH is to share information, exchange ideas, and foster collaboration to improve health, quality of life and well-being in communities by advocating for the integration of health in the urban and transport planning agendas.

Problem

IPATH is the ONLY professional member-based organization in North America. As a niche organization, it's difficult for the general public AND professionals to understand the impact of transportation on people's lives. IPATH is bridging the gap by facilitating change in multi-sector professional development through effective two-way communication and addressing cultural bias.

Market

The market encompasses all sectors of academia and practice involved in transportation and health such as civil engineering, urban planning, policy, public health, economics, environmental sustainability, safety and beyond.

IPATH Product Offerings

IPATH is in the process of developing a Transport & Health Performance Metric Guidebook (THPMG). This resource will provide qualitative and quantitative guidance to the development of mobility infrastructure projects. Assessment tools are necessary to provide justification to funders and decision-makers regarding the feasibility, operation and long-term costs of a transportation facility. It is even more important to evaluate the potential health impacts, both positive (e.g., increases in active travel) and negative (e.g., increases in air pollution and respiratory illness). In addition, IPATH as a member-based organization promotes collaboration of cross-sector learning through an Annual Meeting in which scientific and practice project results are shared and published. IPATH will increase its offerings as the organization grows.

Funding Request

As a novel professional organization, funding is a challenge since a majority of support is specific to established concepts. Transportation and health is in its infancy in the United States. In addition, membership for this same reasoning. Funding will be used to pay staff, hire new staff, but more importantly to cover the cost of completing and publishing the Guidebook as on OPEN ACCESS resource.

IPATH Team

IPATH has a team of nationally recognized transdisciplinary professionals on the Board of Directors including two trusted advisors to lead the process. The IPATH Founder/CEO/Executive Director, Karyn M. Warsow is dedicated to ensuring that the concept of health becomes an accepted consideration in all transportation projects. In reality, it's the ability of a PEOPLE to move freely and safely that defines the continued evolution of a society and the quality of a life.
