Project Description
By Iman Akilah is a Womenswear Clothing line that is specifically designed with curvy women in mind. Our designer, Iman Akilah designs the line in Atlanta, Ga and we produce our clothing in New York City's Fashion District. We use style lines and silhouettes to highlight your curves with sass. Our mission is to empower women to celebrate the natural curves of their silhouette by wearing clothing that is designed to highlight them with strategically placed style lines, darts, and stitching.
WHO IS IMAN AKILAH?
Hey, my name is Iman. I am a mom-fash-preneur (mommy + fashion designer + entrepreneur) and I'm from the ATL!
In high school I designed my prom dresses before attending SCAD and Academy of Art University where I studied Fashion Design.
I remember going shopping and trying on clothes and nothing fitting correctly. My pants would either have a gap in the back at my waistline, or I'll grab my size and the fabric would bunch at my hips, or my dress would bunch up along my back from my shoulders to waist because of my hip to waist ratio. I would put a blouse on but it would pull at my breasts and give this ruffle affect. The clothes would be gorgeous but unless I'd be buying knits the clothes would look terrible on me.
So I started By Iman Akilah. My goal is to empower women through the clothes I design to embrace their curves and show them off from ladies night to date night. I design feminine yet functional pieces that are specifically for women who have large breasts, wide hips and big butts.
INSPIRATION
If I've been experiencing these pain points all my life, I knew other women were as well. By Iman Akilah is inspired by women who are unrepresented in the Fashion Industry. An industry who regularly celebrates one body type and one figure. Every style we release is named after a woman who embodies the By Iman Akilah silhouette. Each style comes with a hang tag that includes a QR code that takes you to a style guide. Our focus is not solely on the design, but also the fabrication and fit.
SPRING/SUMMER 2020
This Summer we released our Joyce Dress which was inspired by ice cream parlors and my grandmother Joyce. The silhouette of Joyce is an upside down ice cream cone. The bright colors Joyce is offered in represent playful ice cream flavors. My grandma Lucinda Joyce is all things sass, and class yet sweet like ice cream.

FALL/WINTER 2020
Our Fall/Winter Collection is called Shades of Black Women. A Collection inspired by the By Iman Akilah team. A team of incredible black women - Kay, Shenee, Gabby, Lenese, Katrina, Tanesha, Yadaira, Akilah, Mia, Kiki, Asha and LeNaye.
This collection consists of 11 Styles - 3 Dresses, 3 Blouses, 2 Pair of Pants, 1 Skirt and 2 Jackets. I've designed an abstract print that showcases the faces of these women in their different melanin hues.
The collection is being released in different tones of brown to represent the "Shades of Black Women."
Our Collection is produced in a factory in New York City's Fashion District.
