Project Description

Sad Girls Club’s new therapy scholarship program Remedy is granting quarterly 1-on-1 talk therapy sessions to BIPOC women and men.

After launching Remedy in Fall 2022, we received over 900 applications for the program and were able to provide 120 hours of free therapy to 15 grantees—a true testament to this immediate need. This positive and warming response has uplifted us to raise our initial goal from 120 hours of free therapy to 1,000 hours, and from 15 grantees to 50. For every $25k raised, we’ll be able to support 10 members of our Remedy community with twice monthly sessions for one year.

Why Remedy

Eight of 10 people in the Cost of Therapy Survey organized by Very Well Mind felt that therapy was a good investment. But even those whose care was covered in part by insurance reported concerns about continuing to afford it. Christine M. Crawford, M.D., MPH, Assistant Medical Director at NAMI says that being able to connect with a mental health professional who can embody the experiences of women of color is vital to getting help.

Women of color have very few options when choosing a mental health provider of color. In fact, according to a data-point study published in 2020 by the American Psychological Association (APA), less than 5 percent of mental-health providers were Black. Asian providers made up about 4 percent, as did Hispanic providers. As the APA points out, the racial breakdown of providers does not reflect the makeup of the U.S., which poses a problem.

Join us in making this change.

How

Remedy will grant quarterly therapy scholarships that prioritize Black women and the BIPOC population through 1-on-1 talk therapy with a safe space to cope, express themselves and seek professional advice without having the burden of costs.

About Sad Girls Club

Since 2017, Sad Girls Club has been healing young Black women globally by creating community, providing access to resources and shifting the narrative around mental wellness. We're that sweet spot of unbiased support between your friends and family. Your mental health is our priority and we have supported tens of thousands through in-person and digital events, free programing and curating culturally inviting safe spaces for the Black and BIPOC population.

It is vital that women of color have access to mental health professionals who understand their unique experiences, yet only 4% of mental-health providers are Black. Our next priority at Sad Girls Club is to provide 1:1 therapy to those who can't afford it, but who need it the most. People of color aren't getting the right treatment because they aren't trauma-informed—an essential tool towards recovery and resilience.

Who

We're a small but mighty team of 3, thank you for helping us heal with pride.

Our Founder
Sad Girls Club was founded by Elyse Fox after releasing a documentary film about her life living with depression. Elyse immediately experienced a wave of young women from all over the world who were seeking mentorship, tips, and resources to guide them through their own mental health struggles.

Elyse is also a director, activist and tastemaker living in New York City. You may have read her name in bylines for Vogue Magazine, Forbes and Broadly to name a few. Through her efforts to create access and community within the mental health world, Elyse has partnered with Nike, Harvard University, The U.S. Intelligence Community, Instagram and many more. Her mission is to connect communities, spread awareness, and access to resources through vulnerability, gathering, and storytelling.

Remedy’s impact so far!

“I just want to start by saying thank you again to you and the entire team for even offering this support. I don't know where I'd be mentally and emotionally, if I hadn't gotten this scholarship and been able to continue this lifelong healing journey with my therapist.”

Remedy grantee

“I think this is a great opportunity for those that may not have the resources and even for those who are intimidated by the idea of therapy. This gives the safe space for people to explore their options or even know that they have any”
