• How much does a single draft horse cost to house?
  • With current hay prices a single horse will cost around $400 a month just for hay. We also grain and supplement each horse to meet their individual needs, totally around $200 additional per horse. Our horses drink anywhere from 10-30 gallons of water a day, whether dependent. This is more than the average horse due to their size. Water bills have sky rocket in the last year, so in short…. It costs a lot! Around $700 per horse. This does not even include the actual property where they live.
• Just how big are the horses?
  • Right now our largest horse is an 11 year old Clydesdale mare. She is 17.2 hands tall. This equates to around 5’9” at her shoulder. She weighs around 1700 pounds! And she just might be the sweetest thing on four legs.
• What happened to the horse who was injured?
  • Our coming 2 year old Gypsy Vanner stallion was injured in January. His owner, who rare leaves the property for an extended amount of time, had business in Denver over a weekend. She left Friday morning and returned late Monday night. The property owner was asked if he could watch over the horses while she was gone and he agreed. Sometime early in the weekend, the horse got tangled in some twine the property owner had left on the hay bale. He stayed attached and tangled in twine around the bale for at least 2 days. Luckily he did not thrash and injure the bones in his leg, however, he did move enough to cause two large lacerations to his leg, both of which punctured the synovial sheath that encases the tendon. His surgeries were very extensive due to the amount of time he was tangled in the twine. As of March 2, he is still in the hospital recovering.
