Girl Powerful is a youth empowerment organization designed to give tween and teen girls social and emotional learning (SEL) tools to build a strong sense of self. Founders and sisters, Sonya and Tedi Serge, developed a one-of-a-kind curriculum, The Girl Powerful™ Journal, to give girls the mental health tools they needed when they were younger. From learning how to brain dump when feeling overwhelmed to practicing self-love by helping the girl’s acknowledge their capabilities, the interactive journal’s mission is to spark every girls’ personal strength and confidence. This mental health tool is being used across the nation by female youth, parents and educators to help girls build a strong foundation so girls are proud of who they are and develop into strong and thriving adults.
Girl Powerful is solving the US mental health crisis, particularly amongst female youth. Girls of Generation Z are feeling isolated, alone, depressed, and anxious due to pressures of social media and access to instant information. Girl Powerful curriculum combats the mental health crisis by being a preventative program, meaning girls as young as 8 can enroll in the program or do the journal. It is important to start working with tweens (ages 8-14) because it is an age where youth are becoming self-aware yet if they don’t have a strong foundation they will fall into the “Confidence Gap,” with their confidence declining by 30% never to get it back unless they have a resource like Girl Powerful.
When we help youth have the tools to manage their emotions, value their positive qualities and communicate with others is a healthy way, they will be the change we wish to see in the world.
