Project Description

I am Khadeshia, the creator of Akoma (Heart) Bloom Wellness, with God's guidance of course! The foundation of my business is my heart because that is where it all began for me.  At a certain point in my life, I could not ignore the desires of my heart.  Those desires caused me to stop working 9-5s and begin to check in on me after years of going through the motions, medicating my pain through work and even co-dependent relationships. My business was birthed from my own healing journey.

Having access to yoga and various mind, body, soul, spirit wellness practices continue to empower me to mother and doctor myself as well as parent my children in compassionate healthy ways.  When I began working through my own deep trauma and depression through meditation, breathing and yoga movement; I knew that I needed to share this practice with others.  I began to understand that I was not the only person who had carried the pain of my past to the present day.  There were all of these people in yoga training from all walks of life sharing their struggles and what bought them to the mat.

I myself had found the strength with the encouragement of my partner to show up for yoga class when my oldest son ran away from home his second year of high school.  This was the first time I cried on my yoga mat and also when I knew I had to become a yoga teacher. It was also the beginning of me realizing that I had been living my life for my children, my partner and even jobs. That day on my yoga mat, I had a catharsis and a revelation all at once. The hardest thing for me to do was to let go in a moment, where I felt I was on the brink of a breakdown, instead of spiraling down; I decided to spiral into me, with my breath, with each pose and the sensations attached that I had to allow myself to feel in that moment.  I will never forget the song at the end of class as I was in corpse pose The Beatles "Let it Be" and the teacher who I still remember.  That moment reminded me that the only thing I could control was me. The next day my son was found and one of the things that mended our relationship over time was our weekly moments of meditation and prayer.  It can be a challenge and challenging things that make devoting time to us seem nearly impossible.  We don't get to that devotion without the necessary self-nurturing tools, rituals and or routines.

At some point in our life, we need to heal from something and or work through something.  When I opened my business, I fully understood that in order to impact the world in an uplifting and positive way, I would need to start with me and then share wellness tools with everyone I served so they could focus on taking care of themselves too.  It is easy to forget just how much power you have to shift the world by taking care of your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health, when your focus is always outside of you.

I am here and my business exist to show you, there is so much you can do to make nurturing yourself a way of life, utilizing what you already have "YOU". Our holistic wellness classes & workshops are designed to equip you with daily breathing and movement tools, to assist you in being a present and active participant in your mental, physical, emotional & spiritual health no matter where you are or what you are doing.

What I love the most about yoga is that it offers various styles of practices and aspects of the practice that make it accessible everyone.  One of the simplest ways to experience the practice is through breathing exercises.  You can use breathing exercises while in bed, driving, cooking, working or just taking time out in nature to calm your nerves and relax your mind. One of the greatest missions of Akoma Bloom Wellness is to help people from all walks of life utilize holistic wellness as a form of preventative healthcare so they can begin to doctor themselves and parent themselves in a compassionate and intuitive manner.

I have learned a lot on my life journey from being a daughter, self-healer, holistic guide, entrepreneur and mother.  There are three stories in particular from my childhood that I feel relevant to share with you all in regard to my inspiration for launching my Embrace Me Program for mothers.  In 2020, I initially launched "Embrace Me" as an event centered around black wellness during the pandemic.  While facilitating the event and working with other practitioners who added to the event, I started having flashbacks from events that happened during my childhood, some traumatic and some joyous.  I had three significant memories resurface, my mother gifting me my first diary to release my emotions and her supporting me with my first business as a short story writer at the age of 9.  My mother was my very first yoga experience.

Following that memory, I flashed back to 13-year-old me, who had witnessed her mother have a nervous breakdown, less than a year later, my mother was taken to a mental institution where she was diagnosed with a mental illness.  After my mother transitioned in 2012 from cancer, I often revisited her sadness, her love, her laughter and the shift of her health.  I noticed where things had piled up emotionally for my mother.  My mother shared the stories of her childhood trauma with me and even how people who were there to support her with us had hurt her.  I watched my mother suffer in silence and do it all alone most of my childhood. I witnessed her physical and mental health change in what seemed to be the blink of an eye.

I often think "what if my mommy had yoga"? What if she had a holistic therapist like I did.  If she had only known of mind, body, soul, spirit practices to help her cope with the loses, stress and trauma she had experienced, she might still be here.  And even if she was not still here physically, her life while she was here, would have at least had more ease.  These thoughts caused me to reimagine my business and my "Embrace Me" event. I knew that I was having these flashbacks not only as a reminder for me to prioritize my own healing first before continuing the event in 2020; it was also an intuitive nudge to be a holistic wellness resource and source of encouragement, to mothers who may have gone through childhood trauma and or seen a pattern of the women in their life neglecting themselves in the name of motherhood and responsibilities outside of themselves.

When self-neglect is present it is not a time to place blame but a time to take steps to begin nurturing oneself.  The process of nurturing brings us to dissecting the things that kept us away from ourselves for so long so that we can release, heal and or modify based on our unique needs. So many women and mothers have shared with me that they cannot find time for themselves.  Each time I hear this, I think about my mother's story and even the seasons of my life where I had health scares due to not making time to rest and care for myself in the way that I was caring for everything and everyone else outside of myself.

I have been in burn out and in radiant health and somewhere on my own journey.  The greatest teachers are the ones who have been through the fire and risen up out of it.  I know that the awareness of holistic practices such as yoga, that allow you to nourish yourself; along with the guidance to commit to them consistently in even the shortest span of time can greatly shift your health and wellbeing for the better.  Material things are easy to acquire but our mental, physical and emotional health are not always guaranteed to be healed in this lifetime, so we must tend to ourselves as much if not more than career and relationships outside of ourselves.

I am connecting the lessons, I have learned and am learning through my own life experiences and healing as well as my holistic wellness training and wisdom to focus even more intensely on women and mothers through my heart centered business, Akoma Bloom Wellness.  The mind, body, spirit wellness work I do, supports the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional health of people from all walks of life especially parents and their children.

Embrace Me is our Holistic Wellness Program that focuses intensely on the health and wellbeing of single mothers, women and married mothers through various holistic wellness services, such as yoga, meditation, breath work, reiki, holistic counseling (combines therapy with personal and professional development, financial literacy, mind, body, spirit wellness guidance).   25- 35 percent of the revenue generated from services offered to women and mothers will go towards supporting sliding scale yoga classes for single mothers with low income.  This program also offers holistic wellness scholarships for 4 single mothers each year experiencing hardship.
