Project Description

What is Death in the Afternoon?

Death in the Afternoon is a podcast written, researched, and developed by Caitlin Doughty, Sarah Chavez, and Louise Hung of The Order of the Good Death.

Episode one of the eight episode seasons launches mid-October 2018!

What can I expect from Death in the Afternoon?

Our mission is to educate our audience about death in a unique, relatable, and entertaining way; to further open up conversations about death in a death phobic culture. And sometimes (ok, all the time) let things get delightfully bizarre.

From our podcast you can expect:

  • The surprisingly heartwarming tale of a woman who just couldn't say goodbye to her dead family.
  • Baffling, chilling, and bizarre stories of when people die in a cult.
  • When embalming goes right, wrong, and WTF.

Plus many more stories plucked from current events, our favorite historical incidents, and death folklore.

And yes "Ask a Mortician" fans, we see you. If you're a fan of Caitlin's YouTube channel, we think you'll love Death in the Afternoon. Death in the Afternoon is like, 24 Ask a Mortician, Morbid Minute, Iconic Corpse, and Morbid Mystery videos wrapped up eight hand-crafted podcast episodes.

Excited yet? We are.

Why are we raising money for Death in the Afternoon?

For our podcast we wanted to make sure the quality is excellent. That means an engineer, editor, composer, studio time, designer, plus months of research and writing.

You might think that the success of our Ask a Mortician channel means brand deals and podcast ads galore!  Alas, no. The trials and tribulations of making death content.

Everything we do is self funded or funded by generous donations from you. We truly love bringing you high quality content, but we cannot do it without your support.

We decided to separate podcast funding from video funding because not all video fans are podcast fans – and vice versa. We didn't think it was fair to be like, "Surprise! We're going to tack the financial support of our podcast onto our video donations! ThanksBye!"

In both death plans and donations we want you to have choices.

Who are Caitlin, Sarah, and Louise?

Caitlin Doughty is a mortician and funeral home owner in Los Angeles, CA. Along with Sarah and Louise she runs The Order of the Good Death and the Good Death Foundation, orgs that spread the death positive gospel around the world through video series like Ask a Mortician, blogs, bestselling books, and now, a gosh darn podcast!

Sarah Chavez is the executive director of The Order of the Good Death. As the child of parents in the entertainment industry, she was raised witnessing choreographed Hollywood deaths on soundstages. Her work has been influenced by her unique life and weaves together the relationship between death and food, feminism, Mexican-American death rituals, and the strange and wondrous history surrounding the culture of death itself.

Louise Hung is a writer, researcher, and community manager for The Order of the Good Death. While she can usually be found hunched over her computer working on video scripts for Ask a Mortician, Louise has also been known to tap out a few words about death in folklore, history, pop culture, and Asian or Asian American communities.

Thank you deathlings for your support, interest, and enthusiasm. We are nothing without you. You have our dry, desiccated hearts.

Eternally Yours,

Caitlin, Sarah, and Louise

The Campaign FAQs

What is The Order of the Good Death?

The Order of the Good Death is an organization founded in 2011 by Caitlin Doughty. As the parent organization to Death in the Afternoon the Order is about making death a part of your life. That means committing to staring down your death fears - whether it be your own death, the death of those you love, the pain of dying, the afterlife (or lack thereof), grief, corpses, bodily decomposition, or all of the above. Accepting that death itself is natural, but the death anxiety and terror of modern culture are not. For more information on the Order, click here

Deathstination: LA!

Spend the day with Caitlin, Sarah, and Louise in Los Angeles, visiting some of their favorite deathstinations!

- Start your day off at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, a cemetery that is often referred to as "The Disneyland of Death," and will be featured in an episode of Death in the Afternoon. Sarah will lead you and your guests on a fascinating and informative two hour tour focusing on the strange history of Forest Lawn and the incredible cultural impact it has had on the way we view death today.

- Our next deathstination will be for some lunch, followed by shopping at some our favorite stores! Books, taxidermy, oddities, art, and more!

- Next, we'll head downtown to the beautiful Bradbury Building, (which fans of the 1982 film Blade Runner will recognize as the Toymaker's house), and hear about its occult history.

- We'll head down Broadway to Clifton's Cafeteria, to enjoy drinks and its unique atmosphere. Here, your hosts will share a bit about this LA institution's deathy secret, and the bizarre LA love story behind it.

Reward available for one person, plus up to three guests. Donor is responsible for their (and their guests) travel/transportation, to and around Los Angeles, as well as lodging.
