Create is a community art studio in Roslindale Village. We believe that accessibility is key to artistic engagement; when a class is close to home, people participate.
Our mission is to provide a space within a bustling business district for doing, creating, imagining, dreaming. A place for community building.
We opened on February 1, 2020, and although the circumstances of our first year were outside of anything even we could have imagined, we are proud to have successfully made it through thanks to the support of you, our community.
Our model now looks very different than our first inception. In August, we took a leap of faith and added a robust, and costly, ceramics program to our offerings. We kitted out the studio with glazes, wheels, tools, and purchased an off-site kiln.
This program has proven popular, and now over half of our classes are focussed on ceramics for all ages. We are excited to meet the demand and adapt our studio to best serve this new component.
Clay is a friend of many, but a foe of plumbing. Ceramics studios have adapted all sorts of creative ways catch clay in their sinks, and Create is now at the point of upgrading our modest-but-functional bucket-system of clay capture and clean-up.
Further, our electric kiln is located off-site, and we'd like to move it on-site for better work flow, efficiency, and less breakage risk for fragile work. It will allow us greater production capacity.
We'd like to add:
- Two, two-bay sinks for easy ceramics clean-up
- Clay-trap systems to each sink
- Extensive shelving for student work and supply storage
- On site kiln
We have invested significant initial funds to launch the studio and the ceramics program, proving that there is indeed a huge demand for ceramics here in Roslindale We are taking care to grow slowly and sustainably, and we're so excited to further outfit the studio!
Our team is led by owner Gena Mavuli, a Roslindale resident, ceramics artist, and someone crazy enough to take a leap to provide the creative place she has longed for in the community.
Local resident, artist, and art instructor Jenn Baldvins is a lead instructor at Create, and invaluable part of our growth in the studio. Additional key instructors include local artists Bryce Davidson, Justin Life, and RJ Lackie.
If we meet our goals, we envision having the first part of this project (sinks!!) installed this spring!
Create has thrived through the pandemic because of this amazing community, and we are forever grateful for our fans, cheerleaders, and supporters. Now, we need your help to get us to the next level and provide the high-end studio that you deserve to have in Roslindale.
