Pregnant women are at great risk during delivery
We have all seen how the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown the world into disarray and has severely threatened robust healthcare systems in Europe, Asia and the US. Many African countries, including Nigeria, which has the largest population (200 million) on the continent, need great support to combat the exponential spread of COVID-19 in the coming weeks. At mDoc, we support pregnant women and people with chronic health needs with virtual care. In the past few weeks, we have seen the increasing worry and anxiety of the pregnant mothers we serve. Unfortunately, at the moment, many doctors and nurses do not have access to the proper equipment to keep safe while at work. Pregnant moms are worried about doctors and nurses having the requisite masks, gloves, to protect them and their babies with many unsure of what this means when it comes time for delivery. Nigeria already has the 2nd highest maternal mortality rate in the world, and we cannot afford to put moms at greater risk. In the last 4 months since the onset of Covid-19 in China, over 19,000 women have died in pregnancy, during or within 42 days delivery after delivery.
A delivery kit with supplies for mom, baby and healthcare workers can save lives
This is where mDoc can assist. mDoc is setting up COVID delivery kits for pregnant moms. These delivery kits will come equipped with two personal protective equipment sets containing masks and gloves for a doctor and a nurse as well as hand sanitizer, three masks for the mother (for each day in the hospital) and blanket for the baby. The creation and distribution of these kits allows doctors and nurses to assist in the delivery of babies, a time that can create serious medical complications, without mom, baby, and health workers facing the risks of contracting the COVID-19 virus.
COVID-19 is believed to be transmitted through droplets created when an infected person sneezes or coughs or through saliva or discharge from the nose, the correct masks and gloves help to prevent these droplets from entering the body. Wearing the correct equipment assists in protecting the wearer from contracting the virus. The kits containing gloves and masks for healthcare workers, in addition to a mask for the mother, aids in protecting all involved from becoming infected with COVID-19.
Your donation will save lives - Each delivery kit of $50 can save 4 people.
Pregnancy is an incredibly exciting time but can also be an incredibly daunting time, not knowing if you will have access to the necessary medical assistance during delivery would create a great amount of anxiety for any mother. COVID-19 only makes this time all the more stressful. Women deserve to receive the necessary medical assistance during the birth of their child and healthcare workers should be able to do this without having to face unnecessary risks to their own health. Giving healthcare workers access to the correct personal protective equipment, creates a benefit for all involved and can help in saving the lives of some of the most vulnerable in the community.
These COVID-19 delivery kits will allow women to have access to medical care during the delivery of their child, protect healthcare workers as they undertake this vital job and help to relieve the anxiety of expectant mothers in this crucial time. During this pandemic there has been an outpouring of respect and gratitude for healthcare workers around the world. The access to basic personal protective equipment that these kits will provide is paramount in allowing them to continue to do their amazing work, save lives and help bring new lives into the world. Each kit costs $50 which is more than many of the women we serve make in a month. With your donations, we will be able to ensure that 2000 women receive the kits they need to have safe and effective deliveries. Our team will procure and pack these kits and distribute them to facilities in Nigeria.
