Project Description

COVEDOZA was founded by Elisa Molina, a visionary thinker with global perspective and entrepreneurial drive. After spending almost three years in rural Costa Rica as a Peace Corps volunteer supporting local artisans, she learned first-hand the struggles these artists experienced due to limited access to capital, language barriers and little exposure to people that would be willing to support their art. After this experience, her admiration for creatives, especially female artists, grew exponentially.

COVEDOZA was originally born in 2017 as a side hustle but experienced many obstacles, one of them being access to capital to take her idea to the next level.  But, now more than ever her vision to provide a platform where more people can support woman-made art remains strong.

While there are other pro-female artist platforms out there that pay a one-time fee to the artists, there doesn't seem to be an all-inclusive, fair and sustainable platform that provides continued income to the women artists they partner with.  The gap is wide and it will get worse if we do not stand to advocate for better pay, more human collaborations and respect. In order to support more women artists across the globe, Elisa created what she calls an “Artist Collaboration Platform” where women are legally protected and fairly paid for their work per each product sold.

The truth is that women have never been treated equally in the art world, and today they remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses.

Gender inequity in the arts is real:

  • Nearly half (45.8%) of visual artists in the United States are women; on average, they earn 74¢ for every dollar made by male artists. (National Endowment for the Arts

  • Women working across arts professions make almost $20,000 less per year than men. (Artsy)

  • Women in the arts are found not to experience the “motherhood penalty” which in other industries results in a loss or stagnant income after children. But men in the arts do experience the “marriage premium,”—an increase in pay for married men of roughly $7,200 per year that neither women nor single men experience. Men working in the arts also receive an income bump when they become fathers. (Artsy)

  • ArtReview’s 2018 Power 100 list of the “most influential people in the contemporary art world” was 40% women—though this is an improvement from 2017 (38%) and 2016 (32%). (Art Review)

COVEDOZA is powered by its fierce community. We want our community to feel as much a part of building who COVEDOZA is as we do. We’ve partnered with iFundWomen, a female-only crowdfunding platform, to help get the job done. Funds secured through our crowdfunding campaign will be used to secure the brand and hire legal services to create contracts that are fair for both the artist and us, the most critical component of COVEDOZA.
