Project Description

Yellow Studio's Mission

Yellow Studio is a woman-owned co-working space and alternative art gallery centered on community-building amongst women through the exchange of ideas, display of art and the creation of opportunities for creative expression and learning.

Yellow Studio's Founder, Tina Villaveces, is a recent Brooklyn transplant who has dedicated the majority of her career to the arts. Having spent almost a decade working in commercial art galleries and museums in NYC, she has a deep appreciation for those who create and a strong sense of commitment for authenticity. Tina finds joy in learning and discovering, which she hopes to make her routine by connecting and supporting women at Yellow Studio.

One of our beautiful art-filled co-working spaces
One of our beautiful art-filled co-working spaces and conference room.

The Problem We're Solving

Following the rise in remote work and the exodus from NYC catalyzed by the Covid pandemic, we present women who work remotely and live in a new town the option to experience an office-like environment among like-minded peers in a gallery setting.  Additionally, we have created a physical space to build community through shared experiences focused on creative expression, art and educational opportunities.

To nurture the community we are building, we regularly host thoughtfully curated events and workshops (often featuring members of our broader community) to spark meaningful interactions, bonding, learning, networking and creative expression.  We strive to offer content by women, for every woman.

As an alternative art gallery, we primarily showcase the work of local artists and NYC-based artists while ensuring the majority of the proceeds from the sale of the artwork goes directly to the artists, a surprisingly uncommon practice in the industry.

Through our Artist and Creative Residency we make our studio space available to women who demonstrate a passion for creative exploration and ingenuity, while promoting their work and projects. Raising other women up is one of the main purposes of our platform.

Our Residency Studio

Why We're Seeking Funding

Update: Yellow Studio is expanding! We're adding about 900 square feet to our existing footprint so that our gallery program has more space to shine. This additional space is located on the ground floor of our current building. It is our hope that we will gain more visibility for our artists and their work.

Since the start, Yellow Studio has been a one-woman show.  We have come to IFundWomen looking for supporters to help us grow our audience, increase our visibility and catapult us to the next step in our journey.

Your support will primarily allow us to hire additional resources, particularly to support and enhance our social media and marketing game to further our reach, as well as to help us continue putting together well curated and successful events for our members and guests.

Finally, a small portion of our capital raise will be earmarked for the final touches (for now!) to our existing physical space.  For our Exhibitions program, we need to build a wall. Currently, we use a gallery hanging system which has its limits when it comes to exhibiting the amazing artwork we showcase. Additional means of art storage in our Studio is also fundamental to our Residency and Exhibitions capabilities. We would also like to add to our signage inside and outside of our space, an important part of visibility and awareness for our business, and finish constructing our Call Room.

Critically, your support will help us sustain a low commission rate so that the majority of the artwork sale price of our artists goes directly to the them, as well as our accessible Creative and Artist Residency program.

Thank you for supporting Yellow Studio! Your funds help us continue strengthening the community through connection, creativity and learning.

By supporting Yellow Studio, you're supporting many local woman-owned businesses. A big part of what we do is find ways to collaborate and promote other woman-owned businesses through our programming, workshops, artisan and vendor selection for our pop-up marketplaces and beyond.

Yellow Studio Member Testimonials

"I felt an immediate pull to Tina and her creation, Yellow Studio, because of her specific intention to bring women together to further build a community of support and ideas through art and meticulously curated gatherings. Not to mention the chic co-working space is brilliant and much needed in Northern Westchester!" - Veronica M.

"I've been working remotely since January of 2021 and was in desperate need of a social environment for my mental health and enjoyment. A good friend of mine introduced me to YS and Tina, the owner, and I was instantly assured this was the place for me. It's a gorgeous location. The time, effort, and consideration Tina has put into creating a productive, soothing, and engaging atmosphere is immediately apparent. It's bright and cheery and I find I get some of my best work done there." - Destri C.

"Coming up the stairs to the third floor on the day after Yuko's mobile was installed. I knew the exhibit was coming, but I had not stopped to envision what it might look like. With the morning sunlight streaming into the space, and the mobile mirroring so exactly the colors of the rug and the space -- along with me being the first one to arrive that morning -- it really felt magical. I feel like every time I come to YS, there's something new to look at or learn about and it's just so refreshing and exciting." - Jackie H. F.

"I joined for so many reasons. I love Tina, I love art, I love connecting with strong, creative women, and, being new to the area, I was craving a space to meet my neighbors." - Emily W. L.

"I joined YS to meet new people. As a local artist, I was excited for the creative offerings and the opportunity to connect with other artists, women and moms in the area." - Alissa L.

"I joined YS because I love the energy of the space and the people who gather here. After many months of pandemic isolation with two small kids I am so happy to have a place to meet and connect with other people. I am so grateful for Tina and the YS community!" - Elle C.

Mobile by Yuko Nishikawa

This mobile is part of the second gallery show at Yellow Studio, Aki-Zakura. "Aki-Zakura is an installation of mobiles made with paper pulp clay I formulate from used paper collected from artists and photographers in my Brooklyn studio building. These mobiles are lightweight and airy, and make slow turns in response to us when we walk by them and stir the air. The rich colors and oatmeal cookie-like textures are particular to the process I use to make this air dry clay. The colors come directly from the colors of the donated paper, there are no added paints or pigments. To produce additional colors, I mix multiple papers the way I would mix paints." - Yuko Nishikawa
