Our Mission

Empower.Me Strong! Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit health and healing organization designed to support women overcoming cancer to access complementary and integrative health services to achieve optimal wellness for a lifetime. Our programs provide ways for women to discover their healing journeys and share their stories, while healing body, mind and spirit.
 

The Problem

Many women cancer survivors complete their allopathic cancer treatments with a multitude of side effects and symptoms stemming from surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. These cancer treatments can compromise the immune system as well as present several side-effects for years. Women endure these issues in exchange for minimizing future cancer risks. 

Empower.Me Strong! offers cancer patients access to complementary and integrative health as an option for managing these symptoms and side-effects. Using complementary and integrative care allows the body to regain balance through the use of natural supplements and treatment therapies.

Market Size Opportunity
 

According to the 2019 Cancer Facts and Figures prepared by The American Cancer Society, 38 out of 100 women in the United States will be impacted by cancer in their lifetimes. Cancer usually develops as we age with 80% of all cancers in the U.S. diagnosed in people 55 years of age or older. However, certain behaviors also increase risk, such as smoking, excessive body weight and alcohol consumption. The report estimates the top three leading cancers for women are Breast 268,600 at thirty-percent, 30%, Lung/Bronchus at 111,710 at thirteen-percent, 13%, and Colon/Rectum 67,100 at seven-percent, 7%.

Solving the Problem

Empower.Me Strong! assists women to access complementary and integrative health treatments, who would otherwise not be able afford them, by offering a network of providers and financial assistance for these services.

Our learning programs increase awareness of complementary and integrative health. Women may broaden their knowledge on ways to maintain wellness to prevent cancer and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Our survivorship programs offer women opportunities to connect with other women cancer survivors in the way that feels most comfortable – whether direct Peer-to-Peer, Support Groups or participation in our annual Survivorship Show.

Our programs offer a safe environment to cultivate social, mental and emotional wellness while encouraging mindfulness for understanding relationship to self and to others.

Reason for Funding

Our campaign goal is to reach people and inspire them to help our cause. The funds we raise here will allow us to start plans for our Healing Care Program and Complementary and Integrative Provider Network and funds will help us launch a Virtual Health Summit and Survivorship Show in 2021.

Our Leadership Team

Founder + President -- Margie P Torres is a five-year breast cancer survivor. Margie has dedicated years of exploration between architecture, expressive arts, dance-movement, humanistic psychology, spirituality and mindfulness with ways these connections deepen personal, professional and transpersonal growth. These discoveries awakened her interest in how transformation occurs in all things from business to the environment, from societies to cultures to the individual. Margie is a social entrepreneur with several business endeavors including Margie.Torres.Design LLC focused on sustainable residential building design with modular net-zero construction, and Sasvy! Real Raw Talk, a broadcast providing a forum for open and honest discussions about relevant and sensitive topics.

In 2015, I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Like many people, I never expected to be exposed to this disease. This became my catalyst to refocus and align with my life's purpose. I reflected on my skills and talents and how to apply them to help other women facing cancer. The day of my diagnosis, I strengthened my commitment to live by inspiration. In many ways, Empower.Me Strong! is my expression of inspired action.

Acting Secretary + Acting Treasurer – Erin Dunn has close relationships with several people affected by cancer, including a good friend whose mother passed away from breast cancer in 2015 and a former coworker and friend who recently celebrated ten years of being cancer-free. She has seen the effects of the disease, not only physical, but also the emotional, mental, and spiritual challenges that cancer patients must overcome. After reflecting on the previous year of 2020, Erin wanted to find a way to give back to her community and use her strengths to help others. She felt an instant connection with the Empower.Me Strong! Foundation and Margie's vision. Erin is a strong advocate for yoga and meditation and believes that practicing mindfulness is an important tool when facing difficult problems. She fully supports the organization's mission to broaden access to complementary and integrative health services, which often are not covered by insurance. In her career, Erin works in product development for a consumer goods company which focuses on using ingredients that are better for human health and the environment.
