Project Description

OUR MISSION

The mission of Black Girls Can Heal, INC. is the pursuit of the following principles:

  • Commitment: Black Girls Can Heal wants to promote guidance, enforce positive relationships, strong interpersonal skills and provide opportunities for reflection, growth and self examination.
  • Responsibility: The focus of Black Girls Can Heal is to empower young girls to become the most confident & healthy versions of themselves while eliminating all that is holding them back.
  • Possibility: Black Girls Can Heal wants to expand the perspective of young girls to make them aware of life's possibilities.
  • Support: An individual is dramatically influenced by their support system. Black Girls Can Heal wants to provide young girls with guidance from a positive and trusting adult, who will work with them to produce their best effort and reinforce personal respect.

ABOUT US

Black Girls can Heal Incorporation is an agency providing mentoring programs for Middle and High School Female youth of color in the Greater New York area. The program works to form partnerships with local school districts and the juvenile court system. The goal for Black Girls Can Heal, is to foster a commitment to young girls of color that will promote guidance, enforce positive relationships, strong interpersonal skills and provide opportunities for reflection, growth and self examination.

Through repeated failures in the classroom and the development of destructive  behaviors, at-risk and disadvantage young girls have lost faith in the their futures and possibilities that await them if they are successful in refocusing and putting their lives back together. In order to effectively accomplish this goal, young girls must have guidance from a positive and trusting adult, who will work with them to produce their best effort and reinforce personal respect.

Black Girls Can Heal is a program that focuses on the growing number of young girls that are either falling through the cracks at school, struggling with their mental health or are already entangled with the juvenile court system. The goal of this program is to identify young girls of color who are going to or are currently having a difficult time transitioning into adulthood and offer positive support systems to avoid the complications and distractions that can derail their lives. The focus is slightly different at each level but the goal will always remain the same: empower young girls of color to become the most confident & healthy versions of themselves.

OUR VISION

Our vision is to continuing expanding. In the upcoming year we plan to hire both full-time and part-time Mentors. We currently travel to local schools within our communities providing these Mentoring services, with your contributions, we are looking forwarded to leasing a space, which will decrease travel and allow all programs to be done under one roof.

OUR TEAM

The Business is led by Founder & CEO Jaquasia Vandross, a Mental Health Clinician, Certified Trauma Professional and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor in training. Black Girls Can Heal Volunteers inevitably make this program possible. All of the services in which we provide are free, so With Your support, we will be able help more Young Girls of Color become the most confident and healthy versions of themselves.

Thank You for being apart of our Journey,

Jaquasia Vandross, CEO & Founder of Black Girls Can Heal, INC.

The Campaign FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. How does it work? Students will be selected through recommendations from teachers, staff and/or school administration. After a student has been recommended, a screening will be conducted which will cover the ins and outs of the program. Once the screening process is completed BGCH staff will decide whether or not the student will benefit from either group mentoring or one-on-one mentoring.
  2. How long will it take?  Black Girls Can Heal mentoring program will pair a mentee with a mentor for approximately 1 year. During this time the two will participate in 2 45min sessions per month. there will be weekly planned activities to strengthen the relationship between the two and improve a young person’s confidence and hopefulness. Mentors are required to attend trainings through out the year and will participate in monthly meetings to report the youth’s progress.
  3. What topics will be covered during Group Mentoring?  Black Girls Can Heal will explore self- esteem, handling peer- pressure, planning for the future, creating positive self-image, being a role model to younger girls, leadership skills, health and fitness.
  4. I want my students to get the most out of this Mentoring Program, what can i do to help? I am so glad that you are dedicated to helping your students thrive. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to their success.
  5. How often will the Mentees meet with their Mentors? Meetings will be held for 45 minutes twice a month. Again this depends on the need of the student; however we ask that all mentors commit to two days only.
  6. Is this organization only for African American Girls and Women? While we aim to work closely with Black Girls and Women, our programs do serve young girls and women of color, so that includes Hispanic or Latino, African Americans, Asian Americans, American Indian, and Native Hawaiians.
  7. Do you provide services for women over the age of 18?  Yes we do please refer to "Programs" for a list of services BGCH provides.
  8. I want volunteer as a Mentor, how does that work? Volunteers are what makes Black Girls Can Heal so successful! If you or someone you know would like to volunteer your services, please send us an email detailing your specialties along with your  availability.
