Project Description

The missions of A Step Ahead Tutoring Services are to tackle the academic challenges of all students and the emotional, mental, and behavioral changes that result from these challenges. In doing so, we fulfill the belief that we will improve our communities in the process. We accomplish our missions by offering 1-on-1 tutoring, college counseling, graduate school counseling, and editing/proofreading services to residents of New York City and Long Island (if in person) and to all U.S. residents nationwide (if online). Through our services, we address the academic disparity in working-class families and the lack of education (and re-education) of adult learners. We provide personalized attention to our students that adjusts to their academic curriculum and study style. Our services also help them minimize distractions and increase their focus. While there are many tutoring companies out there, we are one of the few who cater to a working-class population and serve people of color as the majority of our clients.

As of today, we are a team of 9 people. We are seeking funding because we want to continuously reach out to students in need and hire tutors to manage the load. This is an ongoing process and we need ongoing support! In addition to marketing and hiring, we will also use the funds for pay operating expenses.

Thank you for your support. We appreciate you!

The Campaign FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What subjects do you tutor? We tutor Math, Reading, Writing, Science, History, and more. We also help students with the SAT®, ACT®, GED®/TASC®, and numerous other high-stakes exams. If you need tutoring in a unique subject, let us know. We may be able to help you.

  • Which grades do you tutor? We tutor students from kindergarten to college and those seeking their High School Equivalency degree (aka GED). We also help adult students prepare for professional exams and strengthen their basic math, reading, and writing skills.

  • Where do you tutor? For in-person services, we tutor students in the five boroughs of New York City (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island) and in both counties of Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk counties). For online services, we tutor students globally using video platforms like Skype and Zoom.

  • What are the qualifications of your tutors? Our tutors are all over the spectrum. We have high school graduates; those with Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees; and former teachers. Our tutors also come with many years of experience and are highly recommended by our parents.

  • What's your tutoring style? We tutor students by 1-on-1 instruction. We believe that they're more likely to succeed when they receive personalized attention with minimal distractions.

  • How many sessions may I schedule? You may schedule as many sessions as you like. However, you and your tutor will arrange the necessary number of sessions.

  • How long are the sessions? You may schedule as many sessions as you like. However, you and your tutor will arrange the necessary number of sessions.

  • When may I have the sessions? You may have sessions in the mornings, afternoons, or evenings any day of the week. However, you and your tutor will arrange the necessary time of day to have sessions.

  • How much do the sessions cost? Our tutors set their own rates, so we work on a sliding scale. Contact us and we'll customize a payment plan for you.

  • How do I pay for sessions? We offer packages of hours, from as low as a 1-hour package to as high as a 6-hour package. Each package must be purchased in advance. We accept credit and debit cards, Cash App, PayPal, Zelle, e-check, cash (under limited circumstances), and paper check (under limited circumstances).

  • Do you have any special offers? Yes we do! For every 6-hour package that you purchase from us, we'll give you an hour for free. That's 7 hours for the price of 6!

  • Do your tutors bring their own materials? Yes we do! We bring our own laptops, internet connections, paper, pencils, and pens. For assignments and practice, we print old exams, create and print worksheets, and use a variety of online resources. You’re welcome to use your own materials, however (we even encourage it).

  • Is there a cancellation policy? Yes. You'll lose an hour from your package if you cancel a session less than 24 hours in advance, absent an emergency.

  • Is there a refund policy? Yes. If you're not 100% satisfied with our services, we'll return the unused hours from your package within 30 days from the purchase date.

  • Are you a vendor with the Department of Education? Yes we are! If you're a principal or school representative, we're available for contract opportunities.

  • Do you collaborate with agencies and organizations? Yes we do! We collaborate with social service agencies, day care centers, community organizations, and more to put together workshops and programs using our tutors. Contact us for opportunities.

  • Why should I pick you? There are many tutoring companies! Excellent question! You should pick us because: (1) our tutors are well-educated and fully screened; (2) we offer multiple services in one place; and (3) our fees are below the average of many companies.

  • "You didn't answer my question" or "I need more clarification." If you have additional questions or need more clarification, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us!
