WEBS Training Center: Accounting with Purpose
A military spouse wants to replicate the successful cosmetology school business model and bring it to accounting to save failing businesses.
Project Description
What is WEBS Training Center?
Founded by military spouse, Clarice Williams, WEBS Training Center Inc.’s mission is to serve as a foundation to enable and equip those looking to change careers while also revitalizing struggling businesses who need to get back on solid ground through an innovative business program. WEBS Training Center is a Virginia nonprofit corporation in the process of applying for 501(c)(3) status. Proceeds from this campaign will benefit our business and entrepreneurship program.
The Founder:
Clarice Williams is the Founder and CEO of W.E.B.S. Tax Preparation & Bookkeeping Services, LLC, and WEBS Training Center. In her leadership role, it is very important for Mrs. Williams to “meet people where they are.” She believes that an observant business leader should match needed skills with available talent. An effective leader can keep the cycle of nurturing and developing talent at the forefront of our society, by thinking creatively and removing barriers of participation.
The Problem: Why did we start WEBS Training Center?
There are a couple of reasons why the training center was started.
One: Millions of people are still impacted by the pandemic and according to the Bureau of Labor, as of September of 2021, 20.2 million workers left their employers from May through September with their work environment being a part of the reason why they left.
Two: As the CEO of WEBS Tax Preparation & Bookkeeping Services, many of our clients are behind on their taxes, do not qualify for tax relief, and do not know how to get back on track. With 12 years of federal tax and auditing under my belt, I have the experience to help these clients. A lot of people are afraid of the IRS, but as a former IRS employee, our business wants to remove the fear. Unfortunately, we’ve had to turn away clients who needed our help but couldn’t afford the cost of our services. Therefore, we came up with the idea to create a non-profit training center and to raise funds through the sale of products such as the children's book and lemonade in this campaign.
Our Solution: Accounting with a Purpose
The goal of WEBS training center is to provide free or reduced services to individuals and small businesses. We want to replicate the successful cosmetology school business model and bring it to accounting. We also will provide training for students and offer job opportunities to capitalize on the work from home and flexible work megatrends while providing opportunities for the millions of unemployed.
Our Children’s Book Series
Supporters can buy our products and we donate 75% of the proceeds to WEBS Training Center.
Why a Children’s Book?
Leigh Anne & Ellie is the first book in the South Shore Elementary series that talks about adaptability and leadership values at a young age in words that an early reader can understand. The series will be self-published under WEBS Training Center, LLC and future titles will explore the frustration, humor, and joy of all things related to working together to assist others in their times of need. Proceeds from this book will go towards the WEBS Training Center LLC, a 503-C non-profit business that offers free and/or low-cost tax preparation, bookkeeping, and notary services to start-ups and struggling businesses for up to two years.
Why Lemonade?
Lemonade is one of the first things that we learn to make when we are younger and that's why the subject of our first children's book! Ellie needs to raise money for a book fair and her best friend Leigh Anne wants to help! There’s no need for a stove or hard-to-find ingredients. Lemon, sugar, and water can make any young entrepreneur’s dreams come true! We are already working with a distributor to help us fulfill our goals.
Costs that our Training Center Incurs
What impact has WEBS Training Center made in the world so far?
We’ve successfully raised $5,000 and are going through our first training program. Five students received a tax instruction course, textbook, laptop, and work-from-home accessories, but now costs are rising for 2022! Now, we are aiming to raise $25,000 to train more students and to sponsor a local business in the Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area who need our accounting support!
Sneak Peak!
The sample pages are not in order and are being shared to offer a preview of the overall style.
THE GOAL
The funds raised in this campaign will be for printing and shipping the first run of 500 books. 500 is lofty, but printers often offer a price break starting at 500 copies, and many do not print less than that. We also would like to order 200 of our beverage product and make it available for sale online and in stores. As an added bonus, for the higher contribution levels, we will also have a plush doll of Leigh Anne & Ellie added as a reward!
If we do not reach our goal, none of this project will be funded.
The more we raise, the more copies we can print and make widely available.
We would use excess funds to print more books to donate to schools, libraries, and children’s hospitals, both near and far.
Risks and challenges
It has been an exciting journey driven by passion and purpose to get this project in front of you. I have spent countless hours doing research, connecting with authors, printers, designers, and distributors to prepare a solid plan of action. Please keep in mind that delays are possible. Worst-case scenario, the campaign becomes wildly successful, and fulfilment takes more time than anticipated. We will proactively keep everyone informed if there are any unforeseen setbacks with the intended publication and shipping schedule.
