Project Description

  • What is the mission of your company or project?

Tempus Renatus is a North Carolina based non-profit organization that provides accessible classical horsemanship through training programs, performances, farm tours, and special retreats. Our programs transform the lives of individuals, including at-risk youth, veterans, and victims of human trafficking to ensure a brighter future.

  • Describe the problem you are solving.

Classical and historical riding is a unique art form uniting two separate species into a unique and harmonious dance. However, there are few educational centers in the Americas that provide organized opportunities and none that offer certifications or programs for under-resourced populations.  To have a riding school, one must also have horses. There are several historical breeds used in the art form and in traditional farm work that are in danger of extinction, such as the Lipizzan and the Kerry Bog Pony. There is also a need for eco-friendly horsekeeping practices and restorative agriculture. Education in this area is hard to come by and not centralized.

  • What is the market size/opportunity?

There are several markets for the riding school. The largest is the tourist sector. We are relocating to Black Mountain, NC, where tourism is a vibrant trade, especially eco-tourism. We have started offering facility tours, performances, educational events, and demonstrations for this sector.  Next, our market is riders who would come for education in classical riding through training retreats, from weekend-long experiences to month-long experiences. Lastly, we wish to make artistic riding accessible to under-resourced populations, hence our scholarship opportunities and the Phoenix Riders program. A new project we are starting, Tenacious Acres Restorative Agriculture, also addresses the market of hobby farmers and small-time gardeners who are looking for educational opportunities to be more effective in their practices.

  • What is your company/product about and how does it solve the problem?

Our company is a 501c3 nonprofit that seeks to make education in equestrian arts more accessible to those who have the passion but not the opportunity otherwise. This relocation will provide a strong arts support community for the program with closer proximity to the airport as well as to major interstate corridors. We offer farm tours, training retreats, performances, special demonstrations, educational workshops, scholarships, program retreats, and internships. We are developing online courses as well as intensive certifications.

  • Why are you seeking funding and how will you spend the funding?

We are a 501c3 nonprofit seeking funding for the construction of our next step. This will be a facility in Black Mountain, which will have lodging for program participants to stay in as well as a performance area for our students and program participants to show what they learned in unique artistic performances.

  • What are your programs?

We have two charitable outreach programs: the Phoenix Riders and Tenacious Acres Restorative Agriculture.

The Phoenix Riders program introduces at-risk youth, veterans, victims of human trafficking, and more to horses through classical riding. This program offers hope, healing, and wholeness to participants through a series of weekend and week-long retreats using horses as a gateway to finding their life’s purpose and a chance to “rise out of the ashes.” Those who fall in love with classical riding, like our founders have, will have an opportunity to explore this system in depth and develop skills for career paths and advancement.

Research shows that time spent with horses can increase emotional awareness, flexibility, assertiveness, and empathy among participants. Individuals working with horses have shown improved impulse control, problem solving skills, stress tolerance, and independence. In addition, past program participants have reported improvements in interpersonal relationships and a greater sense of social responsibility and independence.

Tenacious Acres Restorative Agriculture marries horsekeeping with agriculture for the small to medium farmer. It is an educational program with a working farm to educate people about restorative agriculture practices, such as using animals to control weeds and pests, hydroponics, mushroom cultivation, and efficient gardening in small acreage. Gardening provides individuals with fresh foods as well as emotional and health benefits from working outside with the soil. We will offer these programs at reduced or no cost to under-resourced individuals.

We thank you for your support as we embark on this next adventure.

The Campaign FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

What does Tempus Renatus mean?

Tempus Renatus means "time reborn." The history of this comes from our origins; each of us have overcome a struggle and experienced rebirth through horses. Our own horses have experienced rebirth, as many of them were once rescues. The rare breeds of animals also find a chance to be restored with new presence and purpose.

Why classical riding?

Classical riding is the foundation to all other disciplines with a wide range of expressions, from mounted martial arts to work on the ground. It benefits all horses and riders, no matter the background, and provides an opportunity for them to show their accomplishments without the pressure of the competition arena. It is a meditative art promoting unity between horse and rider, and individuals who participate feel more confident, empathetic, independent, and at peace with improved problem solving skills and stress tolerance.

Why endangered breeds?

We feel very strongly that if we lose endangered breeds, we lose a valuable genetic and historical treasure. Each breed of each animal represents a connection to a piece of our own history, and they have all overcome struggles of their own. Many of these breeds narrowly escaped extinction during war, famine, or other circumstances. The only way to help them return to importance is to show them in what they do best.

Why restorative agriculture?

Classical riding is supposed to make horse and rider the best they can be. Why not include the environment in that? The planet has given us so much, it is time we give back. There are so many people who want to find ways of doing their part but don't know where to start, so we want to show people how they can do their part in small ways that add up.
