Project Description

  • To provide local, Black, female entrepreneurs with in-person events, online platforms, and business education to grow their companies and build lifelong connections within their community.
  • As COVID-19 spreads around the world, it is having a devastating economic impact. Fortunately, creativity does not stop even during the time of COVID-19. Quarantine, although painful and detrimental to business, also gives rare time for planning and introspection. S.H.E. Creates has adjusted their programming to meet the growing need for innovative, independent business opportunities that will provide economic growth for those in economically depressed communities. Through this program, Entrepreneurship Support and Access to Capital will be provided to participants.
    ● Entrepreneurship Support: S.H.E. Creates utilizes technology-enabled entrepreneurialism through online education and mentoring to help diversify Empowerment Zones in Indiana, so they are more resilient to economic shocks going forward. The program will guide participants through every step of the process, from an initial business plan though to commercializations with the assistance of educators and mentors.
    ● Access to Capital: SHE Creates is addressing the urgent capital needs of entrepreneurs and startups due to the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. All program graduates will receive a $500 grant and one year of free access to the SHE Events Market Place to allow them the opportunities to market and sell their products and businesses to the general public.

  • A dollar earned in the black community only stays in the black community for an average of six hours. The purpose of SHE Creates is to extend the length of time that dollar is circulated through the community where it is earned. SHE Creates accomplishes this by providing artists, entrepreneurs, and small business owners with a rigorous 40-hour training program on business operations and an online platform to reach consumers. By providing these resources, SHE Creates increases economic development and financial stability for both the larger communities and families of the students.

SHE Creates is a free, 40-hour, month-long service training program that has already successfully graduated 40 individuals who are currently recording sales on the platform. The 20 student cohorts are formed with recruitment help from partners, such as WRTV 6 andIndy Black Chamber of Commerce, and have on average a 97% attendance rate. The students are taught by four in-house teachers with 147 cumulative years of real world experience, including Founder Katrina Washington who has been running SHE Events INDY since its inception eight years ago. Starting in 2021, SHE Creates will be running these one-month programs 12 times a year.

During our cohort, we will learn the basics of business. As a group, we will come up with a business plan, a strategy, and gain all resources needed to execute our plan. Additionally, we will teach conflict management, financial literacy, and how to produce handmade products. We go through step by step on how to register your business with the state of Indiana. The classes connect students with suppliers and resources to produce products/services in the state of Indiana. Each member is given a mentor to help them continue the process of registering their business with the state and who provides tools to increase their businesses' social media presence. We partner students with a seasoned entrepreneur who has operated a successful business within the same area of business to help them make sound business decisions. Graduates walk away with the tools necessary to execute and run their own businesses successfully.

Internal surveys show that each student’s success directly affects four family members on average. Graduates are able to relieve financial stress for their family’s house, car and other monthly payments. This improves conflict management within the family, reduces crime, and provides youth more after school programming.

The community receives the positive benefits of an increased presence of minority-owned businesses, including a lower unemployment rate which brings down crime in the community as well. These successes lead to a happier community with more positive interactions and growth among its members.

The target audience of the program is women and other members of suppressed minority communities living in empowerment zones of Central Indiana. SHE Creates is intended to serve individuals living in economically-distressed communities designated for government aid in Marion and surrounding counties. It is designed for ages 14 and up, but with parental help even younger entrepreneurs can enter the program.

SHE Creates measures our performance by the success of our graduates and our communities' continued desire for the program. We expect our graduates to succeed with sales goals benchmarked by their number of years from graduation. We will measure our success by watching the program become a launch pad to post-secondary degrees for high school and non traditional students. So far, both cohorts were at full capacity, and we believe continued success will lead to communities' desires for us to extend and replicate our program in other areas of Central Indiana.
  • We are seeking funding to continue to improve our marketplace website. www.sheeventmarketplace.com.  All funding would be used to improve our technology for our ecommerce website.
