Hello! I’m Melanie Greene (choreographer, performer, writer), and welcome to the Sapphire dance film project >> a movement-based odyssey pushing visceral, super-sonic modalities into digital non-fiction fantasies.
This dance film explores a Black female narrative, and centers women at the helm of production, creation, and subject matter.
About Sapphire Dance Film
Sapphire, which began as a performance piece, shares the journey of a time traveling golden goddess moving through moments that police and celebrate the experiences of Black women in the United States. This nonlinear Afro-futuristic narrative explores femininity within an evolving constellation of identity.
Last year, I launched a series of literary stories based on the Sapphire character called Sapphire Chronicles -Heir Bourne, Podscape, and Metal Reign)
And, it is with much excitement that the dance film is taking shape to expand the possibilities of the Sapphire character into digital landscapes. There will be southern opulence, ancestral map-making, and mystical world building.
WHY this dance film, why now?
- Women comprise 15.1 percent of film directors in a recent study despite being slightly more than half of the population.
- People of color are approximately 40 percent of the U.S. population, but were only 14.4 percent of directors
- Combine those categories for women of color directors and you’re looking an even smaller number. (Source: Women and Hollywood)
Representation matters. It’s important to support works that highlight, represent and are made by women of color.
