Queens Tax Coop

Currently, the baby boomer generation is retiring, and accounting & tax shops in Queens are being rapidly acquired by large chains (like H&R block) at a low market price: or going bankrupt. The acquisition process leaves existing employees to an uncertain fate and cuts services that tax offices currently provide to the public, such as year-round budgeting help, benefit application help, translations, notarization services, immigration form assistance, loan application help, small business registration help and other administrative aid. 

Queens Tax Coop is a fundraising effort to buy up 2-3 small businesses with a combined 80 years of tax and accounting experience and existing customer base - and reorganize them into a worker cooperative.  

This coop will be the first bookkeeping cooperative in the borough of Queens. 

Worker cooperatives have fairer pay ratios and are quickly becoming a way to keep the family legacy of the 'brick and mortar' business in the local community without cutting public services or selling to chain stores that engage in mass layoffs. 

This business structure also provides an opportunity to distribute shares of the business among current and future employees that don't have the money to invest in a business. Worker coops protect jobs, decrease employee turnover - and give tax workers the power to share in the risks and rewards of the business.

Moreover, our 'membership model' will allow customers to pay a low monthly fee of $15 throughout the year, so that low income & infrequent customers can easily pay off their accounting fees and receive budgeting & tax advice throughout the year - and not just during tax season.
