Project Description

  • The Lawn Chair Philosophy Foundation seeks to level educational playfields by making academic philosophy more accessible, especially for vulnerable populations.
  • Academic philosophy is usually available to those with the money and resources to indulge in its material, even though a philosophical education can help hone the critical thinking skills and self-awareness necessary for those in dire need of social mobility. This leads to a feedback loop of voices within philosophy who do not represent the bulk of humanity and a further separation between those who have money and affluence and those who do not. By making philosophy available to those who need it most - those in poverty or in marginalized positions who are seeking a way to overcome their material condition - we not only can provide vulnerable populations with the educational tools they need to improve their lives, we can bring more diverse voices to the field of philosophy so that it may represent more fully the human condition it seeks to study.
  • Our physical operations seek to serve the homeless population in Philadelphia by donating library packages and providing free and engaging philosophy discussions. And our virtual operations seek to serve anyone and everyone who wishes to pursue philosophical studies and has internet access by providing free educational material and events.
  • Our company seeks to build libraries to donate, build accessible courses, and to build a vibrant community based on inclusivity, equality, and public service.
  • We are seeking money to complete a library package donation to a homeless shelter in Philadelphia and to cover our operating costs for the month of June.
  • Keli "Animal" Birchfield is the Philosopher in Chief of the Lawn Chair Philosophy Foundation, and her team consists of 80 philosopher volunteers who give their time and insights at our virtual events and brainstorming sessions. We also have Donovan Irven helping out with our sliding-scale philosophical consultation services. Our base is new but growing!
  • Thank you so much for helping us to make academic philosophy more accessible, especially for vulnerable populations! During this Pride month celebration, we want to emphasize the power of clear philosophical articulation in fighting for self-representation. That you have contributed shows that you are committed to helping marginalized voices rise to the occasion of the theoretical human condition, which determines who matters in the eyes of those who wield such a concept.  Much love and light to you!
