Project Description
Mission
OneShelf creates community-informed subject headings for literary organizations and readers so they can access books that reflect their intersectional identities.
Problem
In Minnesota, the top five counties based on population only identify books with intersectional characters at a rate of 6% for children's literature and 14% for teens based on their library's list of top 30 browsable subjects. This gap in diverse subject accessibility has a great impact for both readers and librarians alike.
Market
Solution
OneShelf solves this issue of accessibility for all readers and literary organizations (including libraries, publishers, and bookstores) by creating community-informed subject headings that reflect the intersectional identities represented in books. We do this by offering literary organizations and readers subscription access to a database that allows them to conduct keyword searches and browse for books using the terms and languages of their communities. This database can be accessed by integrating into existing catalogs, or it can be accessed independently using a library card.
How Can You Help?
OneShelf is raising $40,000 on IFundWomen to support our seed stage. This money will be used to transition our database from a prototype into a publicly-accessible community resource. We will also use the funds to hire and pay interns. Additionally, 10% of these funds will be donated to The Free Book Buggie.

When will The Free Book Buggie donations be made?
These donations are courtesy of The Free Book Buggie. Within one week of your donation, you will receive an email with a link for you to select the organization your books will be donated to. These donations will begin once the campaign has closed after January 22, 2022.
What if I don't know where I would like my books to be donated?
If you do not have a place in mind, The Free Book Buggie has a list of established partners for you to choose from:
- Kids in Need Foundation
- Kids N' Kinship
- Local (MN) School Classrooms
- Local (MN) Food Shelves
- Minneapolis-St. Paul Park & Rec Locations
When will I receive my book from Moon Palace Books?
These books are courtesy of an anonymous donor and Moon Palace Books. Within one week of your donation, you will receive an email with a link for you to select the genre and reading level of the book you would like to be sent to you. This gift will be shipped to you by Moon Palace Books after the campaign has closed on January 22, 2022.
Do I get to pick which book I want?
Because these books have already been purchase courtesy of an anonymous donor, you do not get to pick the specific title of the book. However, within one week of your donation, you will receive an email with a link for you to select the genre and reading level of the book you would like to be sent to you. These books have been carefully selected by OneShelf to support a Minnesota-based publisher, and all of the titles are representative of diverse experiences and authors.
