Project Description

Growsureez Mission

Growsureez PBC is a neighborhood grocery store on a mission to provide access to affordable foods of high nutritional value.

What is the problem?

In 2015, over 39 Million Americans lived in what the United States Department of Agriculture defined as a food desert.

In 2020, we saw a pandemic cause lines at local food banks to grow. In Dallas, over 34% of children who live in poverty also live in food deserts. People need food of quality nutritional value in their lives. Yet, there are millions, without access to affordable, fresh produce, grains, meats, and other essential items.

Who do we serve?

Residents of food deserts in North Texas. In Dallas, zip code, 75215 the recorded population as of the 2010 Census is 18,731 and there is no grocery store to serve these residents. Zip code 75241 also an area identified as a food desert by the USDA in Dallas, Texas has a population as recorded in 2010 of 23,763 people without access to affordable food of high nutritional value.

Growsureez customers are the 39 million who live in food deserts and desire a change in their lifestyle. Growsureez is what I needed as a kid, what we need now, and what will serve my community in the future.

An Essential and Scalable Solution

Growsureez PBC's goal is to provide accessible, affordable, and healthy food options. We value community, health, quality of life, and education. We are working to create a network of stores through partnerships with community serving organizations, local governments, and local vendors.

Growsureez PBC CEO, Destinee Sanders, found that leasing a massive space to build a supermarket was not a feasible option for reaching the people who live in food deserts in North Texas. Research also proved a mobile bus option was not viable as people all have different schedules and should not be limited in access due to those responsibilities. The gap could be filled by starting with smaller essential stores serving a smaller population.

The re-use of shipping containers proved to be a feasible, and sustainable option. Thus a construction began on a store for future generations.

Why are we seeking funding?

Growsureez PBC is seeking funding to finish out the initial store and begin serving the community. The construction of the first store is 85% complete with the initial investment from CEO and Founder Destinee Sanders.

The first store is designed and built from a shipping container to serve a one square mile area which on average in Dallas homes about 3,000 - 5,000 people. Funding will allow us to launch the store, hire employees, purchase stock from local vendors, and reduce the lines at the food banks.

Who is on our team?

Destinee Sanders, Founder & CEO | As someone who suffered childhood through adulthood from the injustices of food deserts, Destinee is the visionary and primary advocate for Growsureez. She holds an undergraduate degree in liberal studies from the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at Arizona State University and a masters degree from Southern Methodist University, where her studies centered around the socio-economic impact of food deserts in urban/suburban, and rural communities. She also has over 10 years in sales, marketing, and retail experience. As CEO, Destinee sets the vision for the company and is the primary driver of new partner relationships.
