Mushrooms farms are gentle on the planet and create a more just, sustainable food system and future.
Project Description
- The mission is to bring an urban mushroom farm back to life and utilize an eco friendly approach to food productions and waste reduction.
- Local food is more sustainable with less of a carbon footprint than foods that must travel across states to reach your plate. . In addition, the Pacific Northwest has a great climate to produce a nutritious, reliable local food source that reuses waste product as substrate and produces a by product soil conditioner that can generate revenue. Overall, this is a win win for the consumer and the planet!
- Foodies rejoice! The market for these gourmet mushrooms, including Shitake and Oyster mushrooms, are Oregon and Washington Restaurants, Farmers Markets, Food Manufactures and Producers and Consumers.
- The farm will produce gourmet mushrooms, micro-greens and that are higher in quality and fresher than produce produced in other states or imported from other countries. Whenever possible, substrate like wood chips and coffee grounds will be used to reduce waste.
- I am seeking fundings during the startup period. The farm lab is equipped but requires some updates to the building be made as well as some equipment upgrades. There is a gap between the production, harvest and market time which could be eased by initial funding.
- I am excited about heading this project and the former owners will be assisting me with a month long operational training to add to my body of knowledge.
