Project Description

Mission of the Let Her Rise Program

The Let Her Rise Program is a spiritually-led mentoring program dedicated to young women who are graduating seniors in high school and plan to attend a two or four year college or university in Louisiana. Participants will engage in an eight-week virtual program that will focus on college readiness, how to achieve and maintain academic success, and maintaining a social and spiritual life while in school.

Purpose of the Let Her Rise Program

The program is designed to allow students to connect with others with the expectation to engage further outside of the learning environment with an assigned mentor. Participants will meet higher education professionals, psychologists and mental health professionals, and learn from current college students across the state who will also share their experiences.

The Need for the Program

There is an extreme need for cultivating and building relationships with high school seniors transitioning to college. According to InsideHigherEd.com,  minority and first-generation students at four-year institutions 'are less inclined to feel the same sense of belonging as their counterparts' and to add, there is a significant difference in the success rates of minorities of completing college.

According to the Board of Regents website, of 10,609 total instructional faculty members in FY2020, only 1,871 of those individuals classify as Black and only 1/2 of the total are women. Of the total executive and management staff (1,374) in FY2020, only 350 classify as Black showing a drastic disparity of Black representation within state public higher education institutions.

Use of Funding

The funds raised for the Kimberly K. Gallow Foundation's Let Her Rise Program will be used to support scholarships for recipients as well as the logistics of the program including technology software, external partnerships and contracted employees.
