Project Description

We are on a mission to provide high quality women's health services across all stages of life in a comfortable and encouraging environment. Helping women reach their highest potential and improve their overall quality of life despite the season they are in or what health challenge they are facing. Specializing in breast cancer, lymphedema, gynecological cancer, pre and post-partum, pregnancy, labor and delivery prep, women's orthopedics and general wellness.

In general, physical therapy is an under-utilized resource in the medical field. For women, it is an even more under-utilized and under-recognized resource that can significantly help prevent and manage symptoms that are sadly over looked and brushed aside. Symptoms like pelvic pain, incontinence, and pain with sex are frequently dismissed by providers with minimal to no action plan for management. In the cancer population, post op side effects and impairments like lymphedema, swelling management (in the breast, arm, and even the vulva!) are not always explained to patients, and worse, some patients are told these effects are "normal" after cancer treatment. The list of impairments that accompany breast cancer, pregnancy, gynecologic cancer, and pelvic pain are endless, but conservative treatment with physical therapy IS an option that can help GREATLY.

Empower PT will educate and advocate for women's health and wellness, no matter the diagnosis, and provide exceptional care for women across all stages of their life.  This "boutique" clinic blends together skilled specialties, pre-hab and preventative treatment, maintenance, and wellness, while also offering a retail experience to ensure quick access to the best, most appropriate products for women's recovery. (Think lymphedema compression garments, bras, chemo friendly apparel, scarves/head wraps, post partum bras, pregnancy/SI belts, pelvic dilators, etc.)

Outside of providing treatment, the clinic space will serve as a place for community development with continuing education courses, community learning events, support groups (for breast cancer, gyn- cancers, pregnancy and post partum) and other group events to promote women's health and wellbeing.

What is the market size/opportunity? This will be the fist clinic of it's kind in the North Central Florida area, and in the state as we know it.

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and up to 64% of those survivors will experience lymphedema (swelling in the breast, arm, trunk).

There are more than 200,000 births in Florida annually, most of which come with pelvic or back pain, incontinence, C section scars and abdominal weakness, or painful intercourse following delivery.

50% of adult women report incontinence (consider those women who are too afraid to ask their provider about incontinence or pelvic pain!)

The market is there, women need better care.

What are the funds going towards?

Funds for this project are going toward building costs (rent for our brick and mortar clinic!), equipment and products, bills and running costs for first 6 months, stocking appropriate retail, staff salaries, educational materials,  community resources for care. As one of a handful of physical therapist in the greater north central FL area with a certified lymphedema specialty and pelvic health background, I am leaving my steady employment position to dedicate myself to this clinic, and bring onboard staff (office and PTA) to provide appropriate care.

THANK YOU BIG TIME FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND SUPPORT

This clinic is my dream, but for many of my patients and all women, it is a life changing experience. It is hope. It is the chance to be "normal" again. To empower women to strive for more, to be their best self, and to advocate for themselves. It is a community resource, and educational hub, and a place to gather, learn, grow, and empower women.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When will my rewards ship?

Tangible rewards (T shirt, stickers, etc.) will ship at the earliest end of January 2023, or within 2 weeks of funding goal reached. Non-tangible rewards (consultations, meetings, mentorship, etc) will be set up by appointment no sooner than March 1st 2023 unless by exception noted by Payton.

Why is this the first clinic concept of its kind? Why isn't this more common?

Due to the highly specialized conditions this clinic aims to treat, it is uncommon to find practitioners who specialize in all things women when you consider breast cancer, lymphedema, gynecologic cancers, and pelvic rehab (for gynecologic cancers and non-cancer conditions like general pelvic pain, incontinence, etc.), as well as pregnancy related conditions. Our founder happens to be certified in these women focused specialties and noticed a challenge in effectively treating these conditions in a general out patient orthopedic clinic.

Why are you including retail in a physical therapy clinic?

The products associated with these conditions are tricky to order and obtain due to appropriate size and measurements, compression classes, bra styles and recommendations, and endless online options of pregnancy and pelvic braces and devices. Centralizing these resources under the guidance of a healthcare provider decrease cost and headache for the patient, and provides them resources they may not have even realized are available to help them. Cancer specifically has a TON of products necessary to get through treatment effectively (easy access chemo sweaters/shits, mittens and socks, head wraps, drain necklaces and jackets to support post op, etc.). Lymphedema management hinges on compression garments, a "DME" considered item that is very tricky to order and try on without the supervision and assistance of a certified lymphedema therapist.

How can I learn more about the clinic or be involved in advocating for women's health?

Thank you for your interest! Visit our instagram handle (@empowerwomenspt - currently undeveloped, but in the meantime check out our educational account @thehealthywomanllc) or website www.empowerwomenspt.com for information about the clinic progress and updates! If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms or impairments following a breast or gynecological cancer treatment/diagnosis, pregnancy, pelvic pain, incontinence, or other condition that they are struggling to find treatment for, recommend a physical therapist (ideally a CLT or pelvic health therapist depending on their symptoms). Don't be afraid to ask your doctor for a referral to physical therapy!
